@duffydope It didn't. This is the culmination an eight-year-long civil war in the east. I agree the invasion was not justified -- any war that can be avoided must be avoided, just as any escalation that can be avoided must be avoided. The provocation for this invasion was huge, and comes straight from NATO. Supporting Nazis in one country at a time. Or more.

@duffydope The part of their military that has neo-Nazis in it is dominated by them, has been murdering people in the Donbass for eight years, and, credible reports have it, is constraining Zelensky in his attempt to begin serious peace negotiations. There may be much worse things they are doing, including war crimes. THAT'S who we're arming.

She just told you: sanctions NEVER harm the oligarchs, they only harm those least able to influence any body politic. Leaders have an absolute duty to find a way to bring about peace.

(BTW, you know who abstained from voting to remove Russia from the human rights committee at the UN? A whole bunch of "unlikely" countries -- like Mexico. Maybe consider hearing what they have to say.)

@Wikimedian When have unfair sanctions done anything but steel resolve? We've repeatedly tried to force a coup in Venezuela, and tried to assassinate Castro in Cuba, all to no avail. Of course, in a society more like our own, with massive inequality, a handful of oligarchs who answer to no one, and mutual hatred among identitarian groups, like Putin's Russia, I suppose it stands a chance of working. We've always imposed sanctions on more collectivists peoples, with strong non-European roots, as if that could possibly motivate them to flip governments that weren't already on their last legs. But could it work on Russians? Hm. Maybe.

@Wikimedian We have to figure out a way to an immediate cease-fire. I don't think the West can possibly play a central role, now, except to press China, India, and South Africa to find a way to broker a deal. It was stated from the start that a request from Zelensky to be allowed to use sanctions as a bargaining chip in peace negotiations, so that Western powers would agree to roll back certain sanctions at his request, should be honored. There have been credible reports that neo-Nazi elements in the armed forces have threatened Zelensky's life if he were to attempt to negotiate a ceasefire on terms they do not agree with. Are we protecting him? What's our role here?

@Wikimedian So you chose to stop reading after the first line? Is it too subtle for you? There isn't much the US can do except get out of the way of peace. Its history in the region and its actions so far mean that it must work behind the scenes to implore China, India, etc., to take the lead. Which it won't.

@Wikimedian I gave some somethings. You just don't like them because they are not VISIBLE and not spectacular. They don't lend themselves to easy jingoism and propaganda -- hence the comic book analogy. It's too good, actually.
