  2.  @CanoeToNewOrleans  Do you know what happened? Sullivan is a law professor, and continues to be. After there was serious police misconduct in the Harvey Weinstein case, with a detective coaching a witness and hiding exculpatory evidence -- both of which have constitutional implications -- Sullivan briefly joined the defense team. The hue and cry was deafening. They hounded him out from the position of Dean because they no longer felt he was on the side of protecting women. So Harvard, in a magnificent show of feminist solidarity, fired him and HIS WIFE. Don't take my word for it. Look it up. (In my opinion, and although I would never have had anything to do with Weinstein personally, I think the case did become interesting after the police misconduct came to light. I support anyone who wanted to join the defense for that reason, and college students are supposed to be mature enough to understand why a lawyer would. They are adults. I admire Sullivan, actually, for daring to take a hugely unpopular case.) If universities are among the most inclusive places, then we are in a bad, bad way. Every larger office I've been in is more diverse than any school -- authentically diverse. I think many schools are looking to groom a certain type of alumnus, and that they tolerate differences of opinion among majority-background students that they would see as "threatening" among minorities. The diversity is superficial. Anyway, a possibility to consider.

  4.  @CanoeToNewOrleans  Hm. That by itself does not prove lack of racial bias, though. What happened to (former) Dean Sullivan there was mind-boggling.

  5.  @CanoeToNewOrleans  That doesn't prove that every black candidate is judged by the same criteria as every white candidate -- that all other things being roughly equal, if a white candidate would have been hired, the black candidate would be as well. There hasn't been a blanket ban on black faculty, explicit or hidden, for over 50 years. That doesn't mean there is no bias. I wonder just how much experience the typical Harvard student has had with black people, given the disparities in income. That will affect all their personnel decisions on an unconscious level. I think that's what's behind the outcry against Dean Sullivan, which also resulted in his wife being removed, since they were hired as deans of a house at Harvard as a couple (how archaic, BTW), and were the first black couple to hold that position.

  6.  @202One  You actually think he needs the money? Um, have you ever seen the books he has written, including popular ones? The list of projects and organizations he has participated in or co-founded goes on for pages. To get an idea of the wide diversity of projects West has been involved in, take a look at The War Against Parents: What We Can Do for America's Beleaguered Moms and Dads.

  7.  @202One  I hope the link I post below is not shadowed or deleted. It explains the history of Dr. West's academic career. In short, he had already HAD tenure, several times. It appeared in Boston Review.

  8.  @202One  Well, he doesn't want to renew his contract at Harvard without tenure, as a matter of principle. He, er, did not get asked to leave, but to sign a new contract. Why comment without knowing anything?

  9.  @202One  And I am telling you he already has created organizations of his own. The more free-spirited grad students at Harvard want him for their thesis advisor. You don't know how stuff works, do you?
