@somebody700 WHAT welfare? Literally EVERY developed country has a generous social safety net compared with America. We have food stamps for families whose breadwinners work full time and make minimum wage. We have an educational system the funding of which is based on the market price of the real property surrounding a school. We have no universal health care. We have real wages declining for two full generations now, not one. We have gig jobs with no benefits, no disability insurance, and no unemployment compensation until the current national emergency. This is so dire that the recent Stockton experiment, giving people $500 a month, no strings, worked spectacularly well -- those who got the cushion were MORE likely to get a new job, by far. Of COURSE. They could buy a new laptop and a new set of clothes! A few of them could think about taking a community college class, I'm sure. Might have been the first time in a long time they felt less stressed. Do you have any black friends? I don't mean in your community, I mean who live in a poorer one. Do you have any idea how hard they work for very little money? You really don't know this? You think they're underpaid because they don't work? Wow. While you're at it, tell us what to do to get Jeff Bezos to work, instead of taking pictures of his . . . for his girlfriend.

@jgenoese That Tim Pool is moderate tells you everything. Every day I'm more confirmed in my plan to leave the US by mid-decade.

@VictorHarrys Anyone who can leave any fascist country should consider it very seriously. It is not a neutral act to stay. Sometimes there are good reasons to stay. A heroic person, like a Michael Ratner, for example, certainly did everyone in the world much good by staying.

@jgenoese Tim POOL? Then you didn't listen to him during the past 6 months. He actually pushed the story that the electoral votes from a number of states might not be counted, and that something akin to a "do-over" was possible. All right. Now, whatever you may think of the last election, show me where the Constitution provides for any such proceeding. This was a typical report, not a one-off. I can't say I've seen Pool this year. Boring, and a waste of time. He is just making stuff up, without the literary chops to produce science fiction.

@jgenoese Bad guess. I get my news in three languages, and read 40 to 50 books a year. But like I said, emigration . . . It's what's on the agenda now.

@jocksharerock7318 Well, I see you are entirely unfamiliar with Aaron Mate. If you actually are depressed by this past year (which is almost like saying, if you have a pulse), then I recommend reading Gabor Mate's books (Aaron's father). None of these people are extremists.

Janet Baker I think he is alluding to the fact that Jimmy is a (small-s) socialist, as are Aaron Mate and Ron Placone, and the whole Grayzone crowd, etc. A lot of people are. They aren't partisans, they may not be Marxists -- or if they are, then nuanced ones -- but socialists they are. Big tent.
