  10.  @Marmocet  The binding agent in a pill can effect how quickly the main ingredient enters the bloodstream, and that can vary so widely that it has major effects on sensitive people. I think you're right. Anaphylactic shock in reaction to an essential nutrient is not plausible. Zinc is everywhere. She would be sick from oysters and walnuts, etc.

With genuine compassion for the injured, this would not be happening. Watch out for Social Darwinism, my friend. We have all been steeped in it.

  22. He did the math wrong by a factor of ten. And assumed no one has acquired immunity through natural exposure, or simply resistance to the virus ab initio. It seems that at least a few people do have that. Some scientists suspect having had coronavirus colds in the past could be a factor.

  27.  @notabene7381  A problem you always have with mandates is that they inherently place the burden on the individual who legitimately needs an exemption to prove they should get an exemption. Someone else decides. Another problem is that they breed mistrust. Would you allow Graham to make any medical decision for you? Would you allow me? This is why mandates have to be handled very carefully. Up until this pandemic, many developed countries did not have vaccination mandates for school children. (Did you know? Look it up.) Encouragement was considered to work better, and encouragement was strong.

  28.  @OMGAnotherday Nice discussion, thanks. I'm also becoming very concerned about the effects political measures to alleviate spread have been having. Constant focus on health, pitting people and groups against one another, and stoking abnormal fear of disease and death has been going on for so long that it is starting to kill and cripple people, too. I saw a video from Switzerland about people who have declined vaccination, and it was very interesting. It was obvious that some people's reasons were nonsensical, and some expressed normal, human concerns. The side effects are bad enough that everyone knows someone who had an inordinately bad experience that they probably should not have exposed themselves to, since they were too young to be at serious risk from the disease. And to be fair, it may not just be vaccines; the constant din about health may have added to their stress, slowing down what would have been a faster recovery from the side effects. This can happen, too. I bet it has. I still remember when "wholistic" was taken seriously.

  31. Watching a third time: too generous to Graham. Nowhere did she say people should not be vaccinated. She said many of the left, so-called, turn their backs on the injured. Turning your back on those injured by vaccines is anti-vaxx. Guarantees mistrust, of all vaccines. If you want universal vaccination, you have to accept full responsibility for the injured.

Were there a disease as contagious as the Omicron variant and as lethal as Ebola, it would present a different balancing of interests. And if the proposed vaccine killed or crippled 15% of those who received it, skewed toward those under 30, that would alter the analysis as well. Or don't you think so?

  57. Balancing interests is a principled position in deciding public policy. A safe vaccine that is close to 100% effective should not be mandated, but we should be clear that turning it down is unwise and probably anti-social. But as matters stand, we have no right to say refusal is unwise, and clearly not anti-social. It's simply false to pretend it's unwise.

They asked people from various demographic categories and political preferences what they thought was the risk of hospitalization for COVID. They used 0.89% as the true figure, to demonstrate that everyone overestimated the risk, to varying degrees. I have tried to find out more, but only saw others repeating that number from Gallup. EDIT: It was Gallup. Excuse me, not Pew. I originally said Pew. I need to read this more carefully, because later in the article they explain exactly where they got their numbers.
