I agree with a careful study of this. We know there is a suicide risk in this age group with many antidepressants. Suicide and homicide are not strongly correlated overall, but they are in older teens and the youngest adults.

@cordan305 If you only knew at the time of all the effective therapeutic treatments that don't involve any drugs or any medical devices as a first resort, you would weep. I felt that way when I found out how much they know about who is at risk for severe COVID, and how to reduce risk for everyone.

It's not a proper legal term, and anyone who suggests so is pandering, but it's perfectly acceptable as colloquial language. This talking point sounds like the wokester grammar police. We have to watch our words . . .

@sourceawry4035 Did you ever see any regulatory directive from whatever level of government (State of Indiana or the federal government) funded the School Choice program and then imposed this violation of basic student privacy in order to access a school program? Did you ask to see it? You're telling me you were alone in objecting? Antidepressants have a black box warning for adolescents because they are known to raise the risk of suicide in many adolescents, not lower it. No one can force a parent to give them to their underage child, much less take the child away if they said no. If a child made repeated suicide attempts, ended up in ER, and the parents still declined any treatment, that would probably get DCFS involved. I have never heard of a public school in my life that did anything like this. The general complaint is they fail to intervene, not that they intrude. You are describing a private school that overreacted, if it did, and imputing it to government.

@katiek.8808 Chip's claims have little to do with that. School sports are as competitive as they ever were. Introducing some ways not to exclude everyone who doesn't excel in sports, like acknowledgement for participating, is necessary to help stem a sedentary childhood and obesity. The zero tolerance for fighting, and then ruining a kid's future because of one fight, I agree is stupid. They have to punish fighting in school, but they should make the penalty fair and reasonable, and something that is removed from the kid's record. You know that even girls have been arrested (by police) for less, right?

@katiek.8808 I never said kids should never fail, or never lose. Credit for participation is not an "excuse." Your children may be fine, but not everyone's are -- and by fine I mean not sedentary or obese. Being in front of a screen and shunning all sports is bad for mental health, for that matter. There are noncompetitive sports. You can give everyone acknowledgement for completing a half-marathon, for example, or some other event that takes real work, just like the C student gets the same high school diploma as the valedictorian. Same diploma, different transcript. That's fair. I was just thinking, I cannot imagine having this conversation in a different language. I've known real hardship. My parents met in a refugee camp, etc. No further comment. There's something bizarre to me about this whole discussion. If you need to invent things for kids to fail at, to teach them what that is, well . . . Good for you.

@wtice4632 Pfft. So, when people say, imprecisely and colloquially, that the assault weapons ban was tried, then was allowed to expire, they are signalling they're leftists? Or any politics, pro or con the ban? Then don't complain about pronouns.
