A minimum wage summer job was sufficient to pay a full year of full-time state university tuition. EVERY developed country has tuition-free public university. How do they manage? You must not have listened to the whole video.

They stay on their parents' health insurance until age 26, provided they don't get married, which they can't do anyway because of having debt at the start of life. Do you really not see where this is going? No generation in my lifetime was infantilized like this one. When I was a kid, the college students paid for their full year of tuition with a summer job, and their dorm with part-time work study. Then they could move to ANY city, with an ordinary job and one or two roommates. Yes, even San Francisco, even New York. That was opportunity. This isn't. It was over by the time I graduated.

Fewer than one percent of all degrees conferred are in Gender Studies, and if those people can write good copy or take great photos, they will get a job in advertising or fashion merchandising. You think someone will hire a business major for that? Nice job repeating stupid talking points. A business degree without a CPA, or advanced math and finance, IS useless -- its value is in demonstrating docility to employers. An English major is better prepared for an MBA or law school, or for any job that requires writing ability.

  11. Jimmy went to Columbia College in Chicago, and ISU before that. Of course it put him on a path to doing what he is doing. He wouldn't have had the breaks he had without that diploma. He always talks about not having a bookshelf when he was a kid. Nice try, but no cigar.

Three months of full-time work paid for the full year. Now, almost everyone has enormous loans. Aren't you interested in the evolution of these prices?

  42.  @chuletaization  The Ivies run half of their admissions pool to cover legacies and "special development" (which was supposed to be youth with remarkable talents, like musical prodigies and Olympic athletes, but ended up being children of donors -- Jared Kushner is Exhibit A). The federal government is much more involved in their financial structure since the advent of guaranteed loans. This is a quote from an article that came out a few years ago (links are shadowed): "Because Ivy League schools are nonprofit institutions, they don’t pay taxes on any investment gains their endowments might make — which saves them a lot of money. Between the 2011 and 2015 fiscal years, the Ivies received a $9.6 billion tax break on the $27.3 billion growth of their collective endowments. At the same time, they receive money from the government for a number of purposes . . . [such as] millions in federal grants for research projects."

The ongoing investigations of his business practices by the judicial branch are legitimate, but I wonder whether forcing him to release his tax returns to any legislature, whether it be Congress or any state, is right. I would have to read the opinion and the briefs. Seems odd to me.

I also checked the PER CAPITA deaths due to COVID on Worldometer. The US rate is 2.7 times that of Canada's. Are you talking about case fatality rate? That is less reliable, for obvious reasons.

  55.  @rick3461  If you believe case fatality rates, Johns Hopkins lists substantially lower case fatality rates for Russia and Serbia than for the US. Why am I somewhat skeptical, though I don't outright deny it? I guess it is possible. I think it's a poor measure for international comparisons.

  56.  @rick3461  No, it isn't, because the number of actual cases that come to the attention of the public health authorities will vary drastically, depending on cultural and economic factors. Or do you believe Russia is doing a great job with its COVID case fatality rate? I look at that rate to assess my personal risk locally, meaning where I live, not even to compare it to the risk in another state, much less other countries. If the US per capita mortality from COVID is higher than that of other developed countries, then it has not done well. Simple.

  57.  @rick3461  Canada (and the English speaking world in general) does not have free tuition, true, but there is more scholarship money available in Canada than in the US, and most people have at least their first year free. Continental Europe, and code law countries that take France, etc., as their model, are more likely to be truly tuition free. The English-speaking world likes to pit people against each other to control them.
