  8. ​ @MicahMicahel I finally found the abstract, from 1980. They ran the study four times, and this positive result -- that being, the one described here -- was true in two of the four trials. Looks like (1) research standards were higher 45 years ago, as this team replicated their own research; and (2) we have a real crisis in standards today, as you can see by how Kisin reported the study. Athenians believed that truth was what pleased the most people in the agora, . . . until they lost a big war. That sounds relevant all right.

  11. The exact opposite happened to women who were laid off at an older age and then got discrete plastic surgery to look younger and got better jobs than the ones they had lost. Similar experiments were done with different hair colors and padding. I'll leave the details to your imagination.

  17. The very best European universities were always better in certain respects than American ones. Engineering is first class here, as is commercial art and design. Everything else has some serious gaps, but a dedicated student can find ways to overcome them.

  19. @TheDionysianFields  I couldn't disagree more. "I'm doing this for MY KIDS," while they stab everyone else in the back without blinking. I actually don't even find that so blameworthy -- we evolved not to be able to resist the pull, for good reason.

If they weren't selfish (or if they were a little less stupidly selfish), they would care about all kids, not just their own kids, whom they are using as an excuse to do what they want. But since there is no such thing as society, maybe their kids don't need to have healthy age-mates. Maybe they can learn to use and discard . . .
