John of God was a huge mistake in a series of bad mistakes. Starts to look like a pattern of poor judgment. . .

@linguaphile42 No one said that. It is, however, true that the interests of a massive absentee landowner are materially different from those of a modest homeowner in permanent residence, and that the former creates risks to the latter, and that governments abet them hugely. This happens even though there are vastly more modest homeowners around than billionaire absentee landowners. Somehow, though, they never seem to count. Let's watch and see what happens next. Or, will you be duped by the deft dissembling and public relations prowess of a billionaire to look away? Hmm?

@MJLOVEnow She has got the best public relations in the world. And where Weinstein is concerned, she is nowhere near the worst offender. Everyone who saw benefit in their relation to Weinstein turned a blind eye. She probably knew a lot less than, say, George Clooney did --- or any actor, for that matter.

@lynneryczek9089 They are to someone who is purely emotional and has lost their rational abilities.

@cre8tion26 He's too intelligent for the audience, looks like.

@linguaphile42 Are they secure? Do they know they will never end up hungry or on the street? Think for a minute. I can't stand consumerism either. Oprah became a billionaire by promoting it.
1
@linguaphile42 You think that's where that kind of money comes from? Advertising (= propaganda; see, e.g., Bernays) is what you are swimming in, like the fish that says, "Huh? What's water?" It is one of the most important "industries" in a service economy that runs on debt.

@linguaphile42 People in many poor countries are far more secure than we are. They can count on having the same basic necessities tomorrow as they did yesterday to a much larger degree than we can, unless the capitalist rovers show up at their door to loot their real assets (basic materials, land, etc.). You really don't know what finance capitalism is and how it operates, do you? Even Adam Smith (especially Adam Smith) warned against the rentier class, which is essentially unproductive and looks for ways to escape the discipline inherent in true free market competition. Your sentimentality is misplaced.

@linguaphile42 Everywhere where I've lived where equality was greater also had calmer, more stable, mand happier people. True in France, true in American cities. Money becomes not a means to good ends, but pure addiction with all that that entails. It's no accident Epstein moved in the circles that he did. He attracted those people.
1
@linguaphile42 I know you're into feelies. No worries. I have a (multilingual) library. Don't hold it against me. It's just one of those things about a diverse world. That may sound facetious and smug, but I'm actually being sincere now. It's not something I can talk about in general without getting in trouble. I could talk about my sex life first.
1
@linguaphile42 Oh, she has hurt people along the way: by promoting The Secret, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, a ton of other worthless gurus, and various consumer culture manias. None of these people are honest about how they built their fortunes, and all of them are literally insatiable. There are worse people around, I'll agree to that. Anyone modeling this lifestyle and claiming to be progressive ends up poisoning people's minds against actual progressive policies, exactly like Ocasio Cortez has done. They are rightly written off as phony. (Say, how old do you think I am?)
1
@linguaphile42 Also, you're not sure I'm "very nice" at all. That's fine. You have my full permission to experience any normal, honest, human emotion.
1
@linguaphile42 Look up the notorious guru John of God, sentenced to several hundred years. Read up on that one. It's important.
1
@charityakampumuza5632 Hm, so, who has she promoted, or covered for? Harvey Weinstein The Secret authors/grifters Bill Gates Dr. Phil Dr. Oz John of God, sentenced to several hundred years for trafficking That's just off the top of my head. I don't blame her for the scandal at the school she founded in South Africa, unless the issues there persisted.
1
@MJLOVEnow You mean you don't know? Lol.
1
@MJLOVEnow Of course. Like many in Hollywood, she was very close to Weinstein and she improbably claimed she knew nothing about how he treated women. Everyone knew, and her resources for vetting people are second to none. That's the least one can say. One could also say that she helped lend credibility to Weinstein. A lot of men in Hollywood did that as well.
1
@MJLOVEnow Among others she has promoted: the grifters who wrote The Secret, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Bill Gates. And the notorious guru John of God, sentenced to hundreds of years for his role in trafficking.
