@rvrmn2682 No. You have a right to send a letter to a judge. Can you be serious? Whether it was wise or ethical is beside the point. Suddenly, everything you don't like is a "crime?"

@rvrmn2682 Someone who is not a party to a case but wants to write to the judge concerning their views on something like the length of a sentence are allowed to do so. The letters will be entered into the record and the judge is under no obligation to take them into consideration in deciding on the sentence. Both the defendant and the government have a right to see them. Families of the convicted and of his or her victims often write to the judge prior to sentencing. Where do you get bribery out of this?? Note that I'm not saying it's a good practice to write -- or that it isn't. There's nothing legally dubious about it is the point.

No. You do not report on your father to the FBI. You speak with his doctor. You consult a lawyer. You keep at it. I'm not arguing with his concerns.

@battle619 The kind who needs help desperately. You do not report on family to LE except to prevent an imminent violent crime. You speak to doctors, lawyers, psychotherapists. You seek alternatives.

@patrickrudiger8762 Exactly. As far as I know, if the demonstration takes place in a traditional free-speech forum (a public park or public square being typical examples), and is not too close to the actual home, so that it presents no risk of impeding anyone's movements to or from the home, it's legal. There's no general prohibition on demonstrations "near" a judge's home. Why would there be?

@rvrmn2682 Why not just admit you don't know the law? No, you do not seek out a judge to speak to him in person.

@caledoniawarrior "that?" What? lol

Going public could protect him. It is a risky move, true. He should not have reported on his father. Talk to his father's doctor, find a lawyer, seek out alternatives. Reporting to LE or doing nothing are not good choices.

@terrykjones1 There are lots of good choices between reporting and doing nothing. Reporting on immediate family, unless violence is imminent, is not a good one.
1
@terryjones2053 Actually, no. A conviction is for past conduct. Look up the legal meaning of the word.
1
@terryjones2053 Also, violence could be "imminent" on the part of someone who never committed any crime before. You don't get one freebee. (And what gives you the right to judge when you don't know what words mean?)
1
@terryjones2053 Too bad my detailed answer is _______________. As usual.

I appreciate that he was concerned, and rightly so, but you do not report on your father to the FBI. You speak with his doctor, you seek legal advice.

@nutmegara6452 "Imminent" refers to future conduct, the serious risk of which one has direct, personal knowledge. Someone just left your presence armed, angry, and fuming about an ex-spouse. Yup, call the police. And warn the person. Everyone at that demonstration wasn't about to commit a violent crime any more than anyone at the George Floyd demonstrations was, no matter who torched what later. With George Floyd, the number was zero or close to zero in nearly every demonstration. January 6th numbers were higher from the start, but not close to all.

@truthhearit1471 You know, if people keep this up, we won't have First Amendment rights when we need them. That already happened, at Columbia, UCLA, Harvard . . . You can't take them out of a box when convenient, and put them back in when not. (Is "Free Palestine" a true threat? Have you ever read a single Supreme Court case on true threats, as opposed to political hyperbole? I'm betting not.)

@perfectlittleangel Prison NEVER improved anyone's mental health. I'm sorry his son didn't speak to an attorney and a doctor or some therapists before calling LE. In other interviews I've seen, he strikes me as brilliant. If he had had more life experience, he would have handled this better. Yet most people have the common sense on Day 1 not to do this. FBI is never a first resort. That's just crazy. Now, his mother is digging in her heels, too. A tragedy all around.
