A lie like this one seems harder to pull off in France, because of the strong emphasis on academic credentials and civil service exams. On the other hand, the supposition that if he were a fraud, someone would have exposed him, not to mention that plagiarism is so shameful that people won't be tempted to do it, and in case they are, it will be easy to detect, tends to protect con artists.

@Dwilird In the States, in any region where fewer people pulled such stunts, it was clearly easier to do. I lived most of my adult life in Chicago, and when I lived in a smaller city, I was astounded by what the con artists could pull off, with no one suspecting a thing. My late mother never got used to it. She always imagined "someone" was controlling such things to prevent lies and frauds from taking hold. Even the concept that one school could be vastly better than another one, just down the street, or that private education was generally far above public -- or that someone could simply call what they were doing a "school," and that it was up to the public to check accredidation -- made no sense to her. She could not assimilate.
