  1. Before a major cicada infestation, there was a report on the radio about how to reassure preschool children about it. I thought the concern was excessive -- until the cicadas came out. It was that bad. It must have been hell for some dogs, too.

  2. Noise pollution (including from insects) is very real. Have sleep deprivation last long enough, especially in a stressful environment separated from friends and family, and you will have all kinds of serious cognitive symptoms. The explanations you grab for might become hysterical, but the problem itself has zero to do with mass hysteria. Sleep deprivation is used in torture because it will eventually break everyone.
