I think ignoring her work at Actor's Studio and her genuine literary interests paints a misleading picture. She was very talented and intelligent. She used to disguise herself to haunt the used bookstores of New York on Saturdays. Her only niece (from a half-sister Marilyn met as an adult) has a Master's degree and a huge passion for literature.

@godbyelebenohnegott If you're mentally ILL, you're mentally ill. If you could simply "turn it around" by taking responsibility, then obviously you are not severely ill. What do you think of people who try to cure cancer by dieting and meditating, like Steve Jobs did?

@godbyelebenohnegott But that is precisely what Marilyn Monroe did. She read and journaled avidly, and went to psychotherapy regularly. She never bought any drug illegally. She was even a jogger, and ate a normal diet. Her autopsy states she presented as well-nourished. For her time, that was all that anyone knew to do.

@godbyelebenohnegott In fact, she got mercilessly used, not helped. It's one of the saddest stories I've ever heard. If people could be this cruel to a woman like her, who was effectively orphaned, and everyone knew it, then what wouldn't they do?

@godbyelebenohnegott Sure, of course. Her fault. Slaves also begged to be captured, and were lucky to be here. BLECH

@godbyelebenohnegott That's what you did to me. I never said everyone used Marilyn Monroe. I expressed chagrin that ANYONE used her. You, on the other hand, pursue a misplaced discourse of victim blaming, without holding the offenders responsible, though the latter simply needed to refrain from viciousness, not contemplate how to deal with viciousness directed at them, why it happened to them, and how to escape its effects. I took the analogy to a logical extreme to make the point.

@godbyelebenohnegott Do you seriously believe that an actress with one of the most remarkable bodies of work in cinema ever created, had no "inner stability," and lacked the ability to form "supportive relationships?" Do you know anything about cinema? No highly productive artist, in any art form, is ever that lame, no matter how much they may suffer from emotional illness. What they may have a hard time dealing with is ordinary, everyday cruelty.
