I think Dr. Grande has the fairest and best critiques of police misconduct on the web. This is not easy to do so thoroughly and dispassionately.

They did. The settlement was 2.5 million. Small, in my opinion. This is the Bay Area.

It is deeper than that. Police lie as a routine tactic. They are allowed to do this.

Once they have made up their minds, they almost always ignore evidence to the contrary.

@zenawarrior7442 Um, try listening to the entire presentation. This was true. The perp was a repeat offender, may have had a psychotic condition (Bipolar I), and was ultimately convicted of aggravated kidnapping; the couple sued and settled for $2.5 million.

@chad3232132 The clearance rate for solving homicides has fallen from what it was, say, 50 years ago.

YES YES YES.

How do you explain the other victims of this perpetrator? What do you make of the fact that he is genuinely bizarre: a former Marine, graduated from Harvard Law, and was disbarred for taking a trivial amount of money from a client account? He was sentenced to forty years in prison. Strange things do happen.

@nebraskafrankcourtny It also makes you realize that people who think you "must be" lying won't change their minds. They would rather persist than acknowledge that you're not lying. Facts don't matter.

It is a tactic to elicit confession. They never come back and tell you that you passed, regardless of the result. Yes, they can do that.

@yourinnerlawyer4035 Yup. That's the point.

This is in the San Francisco Bay area, if you can believe it.

The clearance rate for murder is very low, despite sophisticated forensics available today.

Most trauma victims will either experience panic attacks, or become emotionally numb, or both in succession. These are two of the most deeply painful psychological states a human being can experience.

Police are permitted to lie to you. They are allowed to say anything to you, short of promising a particular legal result in exchange for information or a confession. This is one more reason NO ONE SHOULD EVER TALK TO THE POLICE.
