  1. Calculating excess deaths in the US poses an important problem: we have had a surge of opioid deaths and a (much smaller) surge of suicides. We have also had more traffic accidents; at least some are due to the COVID mitigation programs, and some are due to long COVID/brain fog, and quite a few are both (an abnormal life following COVID is going to mean a slower complete recovery).
