@rc8929 When the "swine" flu vaccine was rushed into production in 1976, 1 case of Guillain Barre per 100,000 inoculations was enough to have it withdrawn. Now, young men who generally do not need this have over 5 times that many cases of a heart issue: over 5 per 100,000. Where is the benefit relative to cost?

I figured out early on to check the websites of other countries' ministries of health. Most weren't very good, but the CDC and FDA were hands down the worst.

@Lily-Bravo You do know that thyroid cancer generally does not kill, and requires lifetime medication and monitoring? Thyroid cancer treated properly is generally curable, and a 2009 lesion in Western Europe could even have a Chernobyl connection. It's also a perfect example of how hard it is to establish cause and effect in medicine. Someone in one of these threads cited a published case study of two men who developed serious myocarditis from COVID, the Omicron variant, as proof of the danger of Omicron and the continuing need for vaccines, neglecting that both men were fully vaccinated and had each had one booster. The point being that we don't know what combos of vaccine and virus are causing this surge, and it won't be so easy to figure out. Multivariate analysis is hard and costs money. Propaganda is cheaper.

@spinafex5729 Except that there were only a handful of hot spots where there was any such stress on hospitals, and that was in the first half of 2020. The rest was socially engineered and exaggerated. In my city, we set up huge field hospitals that never saw a single patient. Moreover, there were other ways to avoid infection and keeping others safe, including self quarantine and testing. Those who refused any mitigation are one thing, but to pretend that taking the leaky vaccine was noble and spared others is simply nonsense.

Moreover, OP is speaking as a patient. Hence, in this instance, she is reporting on (a sad truth about) the doctor-patient relationship, based on her experience being in the patient position. But think/do what you want. Don't heed advice, don't listen. Tune out everything that doesn't flatter you in just the right way. Think that you are smarter than everybody. LOL

For all of these stories, if you did not make a report, that is where I have no sympathy anymore. I am appalled by the people who jeer at those who followed medical advice in good faith and took the vaccine. They meant to help everyone. They deserve sympathy and respect. But if they were injured and no one reported it -- sorry. If you felt you should take this and you encouraged others to take it, then failed to report a serious injury, you became part of the problem. Step up and make a report. Otherwise, no one should believe you.

Not one time has he cited an unreliable source in the literature, or failed to provide a link to the study he reviews here. I grant you that not everyone reads. They absolutely should. If you think Dr. Campbell is unreliable, what do you think of Dr. Moran? He does the same, posts a lot less, and is more measured. What do you think of various European countries which no longer recommend the vaccine for younger people? What do you think of France, where asking a minor their vaccination status has been illegal since last year?

@Lily Wow. I'm glad you're all right. It's like most things: the vast majority will be all right, but an unlucky few will not, and none of us should have ever been subjected to such risk. Ukrainian children had a high rate of thyroid cancer in the decade following the disaster/malfeasance/crime. I was living in Paris at the time, and the winds shifted, with more of the early fallout hitting the UK. If we had been told to take a therapeutic dose of iodine, it would likely have saved people's health. But there was not enough to go around, so they didn't announce it or attempt to distribute it. :/

We need a multivariate analysis to unravel the contribution of each of these factors to the excess deaths. This is a costly study, and very hard to do. I can guess what will happen . . . :/

Not getting vaccinated worked for me. Female vegetarians of healthy weight have milder COVID, as a rule.

@spinafex5729 Everything isn't about the individual anymore. It's about the individual investor and his portfolio. When our senators heard about the coming pandemic, they rearranged theirs. You know who the very first person I heard point out that firing medical workers for not getting the new vaccine was unfair and perverse, when they had worked to save our lives throughout the pandemic and often got sick themselves, and recovered? A French Senator, Communist Party. (His speech was not broadcast in English.) If this had been the emergency they claimed it was, patent protection would not have obtained. Information would have been shared with all countries. That's what Jonas Salk did. There is where you should focus, not on hating your neighbor.

@Spinafex Actually, I have a more important question -- an actual one, no prejudging. What do you think about deliberately misleading people to appeal to their altruism? With or without making money off of them in the process? I think that using people's best qualities against them to gain advantage over them is one of the lowest things anyone can do.

@peterszczepanski6903 He has been fully transparent about his vaccine status and possible side effects. After the booster, his blood pressure went up, never returned to earlier baseline, and he is now on blood pressure medication. He reported it to the yellow card system as a possible side effect. Sophisticated statistical analyses need to be made on tons of data to find out if the vaccine was a likely cause, and he will never know for certain.

@garthdryland First, these numbers are prelimiary -- I have read research papers with the opposite conclusion. Second, there is at least one glaring flaw in your reasoning: you are comparing known cases of COVID where young men were suspected of having myocarditis and tested for it (when we know that in young people, COVID can pass unnoticed), with reported cases following a vaccination. You know whether someone was vaccinated, and you know to watch for the side effect -- it was first reported two years ago. You may not know if a young person had COVID, because it is so often very mild. So that denominator in the COVID group could be much larger, and the myocarditis rate smaller, than you think it is. Then there is the problem that we don't always know who had COVID before being vaccinated. Vaccinating those people could turn out to have been unwise, especially if they are young and have robust immune responses. But just parrot one study. Whenever I finish a post like this, I pause to wonder why I care.

A lot of countries don't vaccinate routinely any more, especially for those under 50 without major risk factors.

We do not know that. Only a careful multivariate analysis can lead us to sound scientific conclusions. (Those cost a lot.) The third study demonstrates that a fully vaccinated person could die of Omicron, as one of the two patients had a ventricular tachycardia and needed electroconversion, which worked immediately. So much for your research skills.

Myocarditis in young men from this drug is more than five times that rate. How is this all right, when it does not prevent transmission?? What is the reason for it? You are not protecting others. Hence it should be up to you.

I would not necessarily rush to be vaccinated against a virus with a 1% case fatality rate -- which never materialized over all demographic groups anyway -- especially if I had had it already and recovered. At this point, I live with a 1% risk of death from several things and I never think about it.

In a real emergency, no vaccine or treatment would carry patent protection, nor would its formulation be the subject of trade secrets. Everything would be shared, and studied everywhere -- especially where liability protection were lifted. Clue Number 1 of something else afoot.

@Christopher Edwards You missed the sarcasm. I think that by the Omicron waves, the danger was clearly exaggerated. Perhaps it was exaggerated before that. This pandemic had the same natural history as viruses usually do: the very first wave is dangerous, and each succeeding variant is more contagious and less lethal.

But look who he married. ;) You agree with the proposal to offload risk to the most vulnerable instead, and talk it up as noble. Emblematic of the rotten times we live in. @Graham Hodge Other studies have said exactly the opposite. Chances are excellent the study you cite pertains to the original virus and perhaps its first variant. Does it pertain to the Omicron variants?

@Graham Hodge Just read the methodology. A meta-analysis that fails to distinguish between variants is likely flawed and should not be the basis for giving current advice to men under 50 without special risks factors, and certainly not to teenaged boys.

The problem is, to answer it, we would have to go back in history to find out the projected harm of swine flu at that time, versus its known harm, and we would also need to figure out the projected harm of COVID compared with its known harm. I hope you realize that currently, we do not have clean numbers on that. Second, there are lots of ways to deal with a novel drug that has serious, unexpected side effects. You put a black box warning on it, you limit use in those under 50, you stop requiring it for anyone. European countries have done all of those types of things, after being hysterical for a while as well. In France, it is illegal to ask a minor about their vaccination status. It's a misdemeanor. (As a practical result, no one is asking anyone.)

It soon became apparent that it was no longer necessary -- if it ever was. This is 2023. The initial strains that caused serious illness (in certain groups) are extinct.
