Can you check yourself our of the hospital? In the US you can, unless a court order to keep you is obtained.

In the US, you could sue. If you lose, you cannot be liable for the other party's court costs or attorney's fees.

@TaraSykes3 She is wrong about the law.

@godessofthemoon67 I suggest you look up the law in America. I just did. In general, they cannot keep you. The real problem is that your insurance could refuse to pay any part of your treatment, and you will be liable absent a lawsuit. It's all about the money. But even that doesn't usually happen. Just know that it's possible all right. Think about it this way: can you change hospitals? Yes, of course. Must you inform the hospital where you do not want to remain? There may be reasons you should document your decision, but you don't technically have to.

@godessofthemoon67 Why would law enforcement keep you in the hospital? They won't do that in my city. You are not in jail.

@vickydittfield9822 I always knew not to give permission, or accept one.

@godessofthemoon67 My father signed himself out, AMA; others I know did. It's not jail.

@godessofthemoon67 They might have been gaslighting you.

@Forthestate In the US, it is generally inadmissible at trial. It also creates a Sixth Amendment problem in a criminal trial (the right to confront a witness against you). But that doesn't mean it can't be part of a preliminary investigation, prior to filing suit. You're right, it usually is.

@joebaird5874 I'm not surprised.
