  3. American teachers pretend they are your friend, play favorites, and insinuate themselves into your sense of self (le moi intime). In France, when teachers and adults in general act distant and tear you down, it is to provoke rebellion. You are not supposed to believe it, but revolt against it. It is a rite of passage. Many Europeans do this.
