  3. @Bright-It  He's a hero because he believed he was about to die, and by all appearances, their submarine was doomed. Had it not been for that, I'd agree with you.

  4. @друг-з5ъ  "A Soviet" refers to an individual person, just like "an American" does, or "a Spaniard" does, or "a Canadian" does -- no more, nor less. In English, the noun phrase consisting of an indefinite article and a singular noun does not refer to a group. It always refers to an individual. (Russian doesn't have articles, only demonstratives. Perhaps that causes confusion?)
