Not only is it preposterous, but it shows that you have to pull out flagrant lies and scare talking points in order to make your case. Anyway, I thought I'd have to go the the trouble of making a historical argument. Well, anyone who lived through 9/11, and who realizes the USSR lived through the equivalent of ten thousand 9/11s in WWII, has a clue as to how countries become collectively insane and murder their own citizens. (Explaining US slavery and genocide is a little harder, unless pathological greed is part of the fabric of your personality.) You seem to be channeling that ex-convict D'Sousa. I rely primarily on the eminent late scholar Stephen Cohen.

In short, the USSR was both vastly better and vastly worse than we were told. That anyone else besides the United States could be the center of fascination for humanity, and that anything truly important was happening anywhere else, is what the American haute bourgeoisie were determined to conceal.

Great points! I'm not sure, though, where Wolff gets his historical timeline wrong, because he did not talk very much about WWII. I may have missed it. (Timestamp?) BTW, after watching Adam Curtis's latest documentary, I read Limonov, "It's Me, Eddie." Limonov was a very disturbed and disordered man, but the story of Russian emigres in 1970s and '80s New York, many of whom wanted back in to the Soviet Union but could not go back, is really fascinating. The book is hard to find except in libraries. It is out of print. (Also, a warning: If Henry Miller is not something you can stand to read, this is probably worse.)

@АлександрИванов-ш2я2п Well, that's hard to believe as well, given that non-Western Europeans tend to be very critical of society and of the state, but NOT in the way you see here. Not at all. The mentality couldn't be more different. I'm sure they were happy to have a secure base for their lives. That was something the USSR did strive to provide.
