John Money had Janet Frame committed after misdiagnosing her as psychotic. Frame was within days of being lobotomized when she won a literary award for her short stories, and the lobotomy was cancelled. How is it that no one remembers the fantastic film about Janet Frame's life? Well, that was John Money, too.

@ParalyzedPower Be really kind and tell them that there are a lot of children who are troubled now, and we should be careful not to make them feel unwelcome at school, or to scare them or subject them to teasing, because they are not well. All we can do is understand that they have emotional problems and we can try not to hurt their feelings. But most important, tell the kids in your family: Don't listen to those kids. They are troubled, they are lonely because of how they are, and sometimes they wish everyone else were like them, but YOU are YOU, you are fine just the way you are, and we love you. Keep it simple and clear. Loud and clear. Don't do anything to start a tug of war; that's what provokes an adolescent to side with their "friends," to "prove" they are brave and loyal.

@highroller-jq3ix Now address the point about a 1% failure rate (your claim; I don't believe it is that low) being absolutely catastrophic. You don't risk chemical sterilization where 100 per 100,000 will not even have the benefit you claim to be seeking.

@Anu4343 One percent is an enormously huge number, given the nature of the harm. And that is if it is "only" one percent. We never had so many children and adolescents demanding this particular intervention, so we don't know what is driving these new patients.

I have been too compassionate in life, so I'm going to say this from that perspective. Please carefully consider dropping this "friend." I know that's harsh, but please. Think about it, and listen to that inner voice. If you remain friends with her, chances are you will regret it. And if you do come to regret it, drop her then.

@WardofSquid Someone believes this happened FIFTEEN YEARS AGO? That would be 2007 - 2008. That was the Great Recession. People were getting kicked out of their homes back then, not being sent for trans reeducation. P. S. Math is fun.

@darcynicholl Even the people who know that 2023 minus 15 equals 2008? This push to "affirm" did not happen until the last few years. I'm not sure CPS was involved anywhere in (claimed) gender dysphoria before Biden took office.

@highroller-jq3ix For a drastic procedure applied to minors, one that can deprive them of their right to try to become birth parents someday, and can have other very serious consequences, including cognitive consequences, a 1% failure rate is horrible. That is 100 per 100,000; drugs are withdrawn for adults when that kind of harm is uncovered.
