Considering Zizek was in the house, I suspect they did understand very well. But neither of us knows, really. I'm not sure I want to know. I'm still nurturing the hope that people who care about these things read.

Hierarchical struggle as the motor of history is "absolutely true," and characterizes all human societies as part of our biology, according to Peterson? Marshall Sahlins addressed this. NEVER did Marx suggest that the bourgeoisie was the repository of all "evil" -- MUCH to the contrary. He considered it a great revolutionary force that embodied progress. He did not think history began with capitalism. My God. Peterson is misrepresenting the Communist Manifesto so much by minute 10, and in favor of the unscientific mysticism of a Jung? This is sad. Only people who have already made up their minds are impressed. More proof no one reads, and votes up self-serving discourses. Actually, communists were never as corrupt as capitalists. Communists prevented at least two nuclear exchanges, capitalists dropped two bombs as a demonstration of power, not to end the war.

I used to dislike Peterson. After his recent bout with drug reactions and habituation, etc., I feel for him more than I did. This audience reaction for the most part reflects the fact that people do not read, and that they greatly reward self-serving discourses. The fact that they do more and more is a bad sign, not a sign of healthy self-criticism or resilience. That a Peterson can make millions on this spiel is a bad sign. I think that Peterson himself realizes it, and even worries about it at times. He is one odd dude. Some combination of Jung and Nietzsche gets recycled every few decades in right-leaning Western societies, and Peterson caught the wave and really rode it this time. He also has had a lifelong obsession with Russia, another tell. Westerners get obsessed with various "mysterious, enigmatic" non-Western peoples on a regular basis, with Russia being a favorite of those who cannot relate as much to people of color. (So, Tibetan Buddhism won't work.) It's all so predictable. He did do one good video, on creativity, at a major Canadian art museum. It wasn't political, and he was so much more honest and spontaneous in that one. It's the only one of his I've ever seen that I like.

Pseudo-social Darwinism . . . "Lobsters form lobster hierarchies, and using similar neurotransmitters!" Hmm. And what about the origins of different species? Funny how those pesky little mammals that were running underfoot and hiding for their lives ended up dominant after tens of millions of years of dinosaur dominance. You can find better biological analogies than the ones Peterson has dreamed up, though I think we should tread very, very lightly on those comparisons. They don't tell us much.
