A bilingual English-Portuguese speaker will learn French several times faster than anyone else. Spanish or Italian bilinguals almost as fast as Portuguese ones. It's a sight to behold. You usually can't do that with Germanic languages or Slavic ones. Most of them are too different from each other. (Ingmar Bergman struggled with German and hated it.)

@oceanechevalier7194 People in France told me this! So cool. One physics major, who was not a language buff at all, said to me "Latin is something different for us. If you listen to your teacher and do your Latin homework, then spend a summer in Italy or Spain, in six weeks you are understanding them, and in 3 or 4 months you are speaking."

@oceanechevalier7194 P. S. English speakers who study Latin do not get this result. They would have to be really gifted.

@_blank-_ I love French, but agree with you. Actually, Mexican Spanish is great. Very clear, consistent pronunciation of all consonants and vowels.

@taoliu3949 Yes, true. (I did say "most.")

@_blank-_ When my father and I were on the bus in France speaking Montenegrin (a Serbo-Croatian dialect), people would listen to us because they thought it was pretty! LMAO, um, NO, not compared to any Romance language -- though I admit Greek and Latin had some influence on pronunciation all over the north Mediterranean, so there is that. Helped a little.
