Greenwald is authentic left, and refuses to sneer at the ordinary working people, but when it comes to certain civil liberties, those override any other considerations. If there were ever a clash between a genuine left-wing policy and the First Amendment -- though it's not easy to see how there would be -- the First Amendment wins.
