  2. This is the same shock I experienced listening to a French station discussing freedom of discourse and the war in Gaza. Judith Butler was invited to speak in Paris, and her talk was canceled by the mayor of Paris. The leader of the Jewish peace group that invited Butler was so well spoken that it was stunning, after all the bullying we are subjected to all the time. She was so calm. She appreciated the gravity of the crisis and was so diplomatic. And she is only the leader of a small group, not a nation.

As for Shakespeare, he studied Latin and read Holinshed's Histories. All those mentioned read compulsively. But you think I'm overreaching. Oddly enough, I thought "some" was greater than "none." When the collapse comes, I wonder what explanation you'll reach for.

Take any humanities major, literally any, add a year of introductory calculus, a year of accounting, a few courses in economics, a semester of finance, and a semester of computer science: THAT is what the top programs want, plus two years of work experience. (In college, humanities majors, unlike engineers, are expected to complete a lot of electives outside of their field.) The most common college major is Business, and has been since Reagan. Without a CPA or advanced finance, that is a joke.

  16. @kafikfishna8806  I took grad-level English at night at a no-name public university that offers only a few doctoral programs, all education-related. It was brilliant. Half the class or more were bilingual, and immigrants or children of recent immigrants -- and I was with the majority. After studying the Henriad, I'll never miss the signs of a double cross. Extremely useful stuff.

Now that English is really getting interesting (we studied the history of criticism in the field, which is the basis for my claim), it just so happens to be under attack. When those who don't know persuade those who know less, consult Plato's Gorgias to find out the usual outcome.
