I'm puzzled as to why the prosecution offers an inherently unpersuasive motive, considering they do not need to speculate about the motive to prove their case. The fear his wife and son would turn on him, as Briahna suggested, sounds more plausible. He may have had more than one motive.

@southerncross5360 Indeed, you could be right about that as well. We'll see what the jury decides. His remaining child's testimony is probably the only thing that can elicit reasonable doubt. Also, juries tend to be unduly impressed by a person who agrees to testify because they know he is not obligated to. It's funny, but we would have had to have been there to sense how it went over.
