She never said that they can teach "whatever they want." The major work of an American author who won a Nobel Prize in Literature is not "whatever."

@JamesJones-sf3du No one has yet to explain what she got wrong from a legal perspective. Speech K through 12 is not prescribed, for teachers or students. There are constant curriculum wars, but that's beside the point: exactly what instruction will be offered on what subjects is not in itself a restriction of First Amendment freedoms.

@JamesJones-sf3du You think that limits her freedom of speech? Even assuming a teacher represents the government, the government itself has freedom of speech. It is not muzzled. That was the distinction made during COVID: censorship, vs. adding its own message to the "marketplace of ideas."

@JamesJones-sf3du Government employees have First Amendment protections when speaking on matters of public concern in their workplace that employees in the private sector lack. A private sector boss can fire you for praising RFK Jr. If he doesn't, it's primarily because it would look bad. He'd try to come up with some cover story.

The top quintile is nearly 70 million people --- a good-sized country. That leaves 80% in serious decline. And as for the top quintile, about half are not secure in that position. One serious illness can upend everything.
