  2.  @NotSure421  I am part French and lived there. Piketty sounds like a typical intellectual who learned to read English extremely well, and never paid attention to phonology. All the French doctoral students I knew sounded like this or worse. People who read all of Faulkner's works, or all of Shakespeare's, sounded like this AND talked slower, because they lacked fast access to a productive vocabulary. They had receptive vocabulary. It is unfortunate, you're right about that.

  4.  @MaryJohanna  This is so true. The sole problem in Germany is early tracking. We have GOT to make sure that a high school graduate has a path to college -- not that he should take it. But it has to be his choice. The possibility cannot be closed off forever at age 12, or 16, or 26. That flexibility is the one good thing in the US. Every major city has some true college-level open enrollment option, as it should.

  10.  zaxx19  But it's not evident what we should be doing. It seems to me that the jobs in the coming decades will be increasingly white-collar/service sector, which means college. High school isn't cutting it. And there is no good way to absorb a generation of workers ages 16 to 24. Where will they work? Door Dash?

  11.  zaxx19  Why do you think I disagree? As for whether a person needs a four-year degree for a white-collar, service sector, office job, let me ask you this: who gets those jobs? Do they need the university training to do the job, or do they need the piece of paper to make it through HR screening and be hired for the job? Notice I'm not mentioning real qualifications, job duties, fairness, etc. I'm saying employers have given up on high school grads. No, it isn't fair. I also stand by the notion of opportunity. Only an adult can decide they do not want to pursue a college degree. A minor can't make that decision. At 16, the average person has over FIVE decades of worklife ahead of them, and probably jobs in two distinct fields. Who can tell them what to do? Fifty years is a long time.

  12.  zaxx19  What do you think college kids major in, anyway? The most common major BY FAR is Business, and has been for decades. The next group of majors are all health-related, with Nursing at the top. Very few people major in the traditional "liberal arts" -- and those who do, and do well, go to good law schools or MBA programs, or the advertising world, or story editing in film and television, etc. "Useless degrees?" That's a right-wing talking point. General Business, without a lot of advanced math to understand finance in depth or at least a decent amount of accounting, preferably CPA level, is often pretty useless. A lot of those people don't want to read and can't write. If they also can't do math, . . . ?

They usually end up bemoaning all the Gender Studies majors (who make up less than 1% of all degrees conferred, and could do great in fashion merchandising, if they can write ad copy and take a good photo). In the meantime, no one is asking what the Financial Engineering majors are up to. Yes, it's a real degree, and it's everywhere now.
