  3. Just to add a detail to a beautiful post: look up "welfare for the rich and corporations." For a corporation to spend more on lobbying than it pays in taxes once raised an eyebrow. Now it's quite ordinary. It's considered smart. As for hyperwealthy individuals, first they lobby Congress for tax cuts. Then instead of paying taxes, they park part of their fortunes in Treasury bills, creating a nice safety net for themselves and several generations after them, and the government pays them interest. Some states don't tax that interest income at all. This is one simple strategy; there are much more arcane ones, but you get the picture.

  5. And suicide is rising, and opioid deaths are at record levels, and medical obesity (NOT cosmetic nonsense) is near 42%. No one has mentioned mass shootings, which are underreported in the poorest areas. Robbie, what are those more-guns-than-people for? There were four people shot in a drive-by shooting directly across the street from where I went to high school. It got almost no press coverage at all, even locally.

  6.  @Buttlather  Are you serious? Kyle Rittenhouse is from a "suburb." I suggest you read the in-depth story of his family in The New Yorker. It is quite an eye-opener. What do you think suburbs are like now? You can find tiny pre-fab homes and frame cottages everywhere.

  11. I don't think the average person understands money anymore. The marginal value of a dollar to a multimillionaire is nil. The value of a million dollars to a billionaire is of no consequence at all. While markets are open somewhere in the world, he cannot tell you his net worth to the nearest million. They do not live in the same world as we do, nevermind the same society. What you are describing will have no effect on these people. One billion dollars at age 30 is like accumulating over $90,000 a day since birth. Who "earns" that? And isn't it good to have earned what you have? I actually think so.

  12. Lots of countries invented vaccines, including the UK. If global vaccination were so important, we would have rapidly investigated and shared all vaccines. Funny how no one even asks whether Chinese, Russian, and Cuban vaccines are safer or more effective, better, or worse than the ones imposed here.

  15.  @Buttlather  Well, I commend your resourcefulness and I am so sorry about the shootings. It takes a toll on everyone involved; you may have incipient trauma and not even know it because you gradually got used to a degree of heightened vigilance, and nightmares, and simply deal with all that.

  16.  @Buttlather  Well, the poorest neighborhoods where I live have unbelievably bad basic services. You see dangerous empty dwellings, you see broken sidewalks and potholed streets, you see apartments so far below code that they are dangerous and catching fire all the time -- and of course the first thing anyone does is blame the residents, who usually had nothing to do with it. Then the concept of food desert is real --- whenever a nice store opens in a neighborhood close to a poor area, you will see very poor people buying groceries, even at Whole Foods when they have sales. Liquor stores, convenience stores, and small storefront churches, empty lots, broken sidewalks, impassable streets, broken street lights, flooded streets, lead pipes . . . and why? Why would one part of the same city have new schools, sidewalks, streets, and street cleaning every month?

  17.  @Buttlather  I'm talking about neighborhoods I've visited and where my friends live, not something I read and repeat. 1. I'm bilingual since my earliest memories, multilingual now. I can actually talk to people. 2. I have not made a new white friend in this century. Gosh I wonder why that is, so weird. (As far as manners are concerned, POC are much more like the Europeans I know. Anyone who's actually been around would know exactly what I mean.) You failed to respond to the rest, of course. Never mind, I'm done talking to you.

  25. That someone this young believed these talking points (which obviously feather his own nest very nicely, mere coincidence) before 2008-09 is disappointing but comprehensible. That anyone sincerely believes them in 2022 means they are unqualified for the cushy job they have. I have to hope they are lying. Being paid handsomely to lie is a centuries-old tradition. Being way ignorant and an "influencer" -- this is new.
