Most developed countries DO have public housing, and very basic public assistance to avoid actual hunger and homelessness, which can harm an entire population, not just those going hungry and living under bridges, and their young adults start out life with the education they need, and basic health care. Most developed countries DO have excellent public transit, at very low cost, and many have excellent, low cost train systems. The lack of accountability YOU should care about: Wall Street crashes the global financial system, gets even bigger bailouts and bonuses; a Tony Hayward presides over the worst ecological disaster in history (BP's well explodes) and goes on to a MUCH better job and more money right after. Trump has six bankruptcies, no problem. He can be a billionaire and president. HSBC is caught laundering drug money and possible terrorist funds -- oh well. Too Big To Prosecute. What in the world are YOU worrying about? Wake up.

@TheRatsintheWalls So, are you being sincere, or a pious jerk, too? I can't tell. It was incorrect to impute ad hominem, or some insipid values blather, to my posts. Sorry, Bub. It is too obviously not present. These debates are not all about "values." We can quantify this stuff. I agree irresponsibility is a bad thing, on absolutely every level. When you see it on the smallest scale, however, might it be due to systematic demoralization? When you see it at the very top, is it comparable? No. It isn't.

@TheRatsintheWalls But I accept his point that responsibility matters. That's simply true. I want him to look at responsibility objectively. When an 18-year-old student could earn an entire year's tuition and money for books at a premier state university with a full-time summer job, that was brilliant at building a sense of real pride and responsibility. You felt effective in this world. When no matter how hard you work, and how careful you are with your money, you find yourself right about where you started, that is a killer. When your kids cannot hope to go to college without serious debt, that is a killer. A lot of people drop responsibility, and a few still hang on to the discourse but pick up resentment.

KC JONES This is true, too, but today, with all the competing voices, it is VERY hard to get an education on your own. In fact, it's not even a given if you do go to college. It ought to be. The smartest self-taught people are still very often the best educated. They worked hard for it. And a lot of college grads basically learned advertising, how to pitch an idea, etc., not how to examine it.

My point is, he ignores the people who are not only getting basics taken care of despite their irresponsibility, but are vacuuming up billions, even trillions, while causing clear, identifiable harm, to everyone, that we can document. It's not impressions, opinions, etc. HSBC really did get away with major money laundering. Major Wall Street bankers and others did manipulate markets, LIBOR, etc. The BP well did explode, and leaving BP made Tony Hayward vastly richer. Vastly. I can have a real discussion with anybody who sees that, too. I don't care how conservative they are, culturally or otherwise. Thus guy punches down, knowingly or not! Time to WAKE UP.

KC JONES The real problem is, as usual, the money. It is simply not true that college is only a vocational school. I know part-time firefighters who also teach full time, and are better able to prepare their kids for life because they have a degree. Intellectual development at ages 17 to 26 lasts a lifetime, and changes most people for the better. If that weren't true, I wonder why we don't end education at 9th grade? What's so important about high school, after all?

@TheRatsintheWalls No I didn't, but have it your way. State universities used to be very close to free. A student could earn their tuition for the year with a minimum wage summer job. What happened? Health care used to be affordable. Individual policies with low premiums were ubiquitous. That ended. But why? Read up on the financialization of the economy. ALL of these developments are directly linked to the growing global power of the financial sector, which even Adam Smith warned against. He considered it one of the threats to a free market. (Say, I hope your holier-than-thou nonsense isn't due to jealousy? You didn't think to point out these facts, and I did. That mentality is rampant in the English-speaking world. Competition does NOT lead to overall excellence in a society. One more myth.)

KC JONES Like I said, it's really about the money. State universities used to be so cheap, almost anyone qualified could go. Kids earned tuition money for the year in one summer. (Good for building responsibility, not incidentally. Very important!) One other nonsense that has been broadcast far and wide is that your intelligence is "genetically determined." We now know that is nonsense. It took a long time, but we proved that it is. The rising cost and the degradation of the quality of college is the real problem, two things going in exactly the opposite direction from what individuals and societies really need. Learning how to put what you learn to use, instead of just following instructions, is a lifelong project.

@sparkythomas6354 The first part is true, about the availability of loans -- we saw that in the housing market! The second part is not. Pick up a catalogue from the 1970s from the state universities of California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas, Illinois, and see. Check the enrollment data as well. And see how much higher the attainment once was in English and (easier to compare) MATHEMATICS for incoming freshman. Levels down, costs up. "What's not to like?" People don't study as hard, nor are they able to WORK their way through school (literally impossible); they just go into debt and then return home to live. Presenting them with this scenario at age 18 as the typical path to a degree is unconscionable. This generation has a right to be LIVID.
