@Samperor You think affirmative action is worse than reserving half the seats for people whose parents attended the school and give money to it, and applying a far less stringent standard on admitting them? At least affirmative action attempts to account for objectively harsher circumstances, not reward privileged ones.

@entium1 We would have to see both of your applications to be able to judge whether race was the only factor. Considering what he did for you, maybe his essay showed a person of greater depth and character than yours did. That is possible, too.

JB JG I think this is basically right. Part of the justification of affirmative action has been that the legacy pool creates a student body that is too homogeneous for what these schools want, so the remaining seats -- which are supposed to be merit-based -- are used in part to achieve "diversity." The Supreme Court has tacitly acknowledged this. Attacking the black students is attacking the weakest target in this whole picture.

Music It IS difficult when you have an elite university-to-position of power pipeline, PLUS a legacy system for admissions. Non-legacies compete for about half of the seats available in these private colleges. (The number is a rough estimate, it could be higher or lower.) I thought the recent admissions scandal laid bare that fact.

@edwardcoit9748 What do you think those test scores measure? A prof once gave a freshman physics class at MIT a series of real-world problems in applied mechanics at the end of the academic year. Most did badly. An auto mechanic would have answered some of them. That is not to say the MIT kids will be lame forever. Of course not. Well, neither will the working class black kids.

@edwardcoit9748 But when you remove discrimination from blacks, they succeed as well: which is why blacks from UK, France, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria, etc., do just fine. Maybe you are unfamiliar with the global black intelligentsia? A lot of prolific writers who happened to be black were finally given a podium since the death of George Floyd. Have you, er, noticed?

Elite colleges are questionable themselves -- exactly. Why are they the near-exclusive incubators of future politicians, judges, corporate leaders? But given that they are, admissions need to be rethought from top to bottom. Did these "elite" institutions form a James Baldwin, a John Coltrane, a James Jamerson, a David Goggins, or a Simone Biles? Well, why not? (Two of these five were in the Navy, by the way.) Even eminent black academics often went to the traditional black colleges or to the great state universities, rather than to schools like Yale. Toni Morrison went to Cornell, but only for her Master's, after excelling at Howard. "Something is wrong with this picture," as they say.

@richardberman6694 Yes, and about 95% of nonlegacies are rejected. And in any case, Harvard admits about 1/3 of legacies, not 1/5. What you call "assumptions" are what Admissions treats as facts.
