When people speak in complex sentences, you may need to replay the tape. Most people are not used to following nuanced thinking, and automatically tune out. The advertising industry has made sure of that.

Super idea!! Thank you and everyone else here.

"White supremacy" is a potent ideology that among other things, lulled people into believing that what happened to blacks, then to other people of color, would never happen to working class whites. One reason Baldwin said "white" was not a race but a state of mind.

We have been trained to meme rather than to follow complex thinking. I'm serious. One thing the forced shelter in place made me see is how advertising RUNS us. I hardly need half of what I used to spend money on, and I enjoy being careful in my spending. So, they obviously got to me, too.

This man Is BRILLIANT, and most of us only heard about him after George Floyd was murdered.

@727MeowMeow Toni Morrison's edition of Baldwin's collected nonfiction is the best, and most economical. I try to reread it every year. That's how happy it makes me. Find the moment when Baldwin quotes Socrates. Baldwin dealt with an act of aggression against him, and a momentary flood of intense despair, by saying, "The unexamined life is not worth living."

@Viper3220 That's not what "white supremacy" is. It is an ideology that succeeded in persuading working class whites that there would always be good jobs for them, as long as they "worked hard." Blacks and others "just didn't work hard." Well, now we know.

Any society where a lot of people still think it makes sense to call the police on a black man who falls asleep in a drive thru seeking food, instead of calling for an ambulance first, to make sure he is all right, may have an issue with race.

@Whiskey19841 Dial 911 and say you have an unresponsive man and need an ambulance. Someone seeking food and passing out could be diabetic for all we know. And if he couldn't wake up, he was no danger to anyone.
