Reagan put us on this course, of unqualified presidents who pose and jeer, combined with exploding the deficit and turning the country over to the bankers. The Reagan-imposed recession was the worst for young people starting out in life since the Great Depression, until we come to this century. The industrial manufacturing workforce peaked in absolute numbers under Carter. Even after the inflation, the minimum wage had more purchasing power then than it has ever had since -- and it wasn't great then, I agree. It wasn't clearly a living wage since the late 60s. But two people making minimum wage and being prudent could still start out in life, in ANY city. No one had college loans under Carter, they had income-averaging for tax purposes. No retiree paid taxes on their Social Security. The worst part was that by his second term, he wasn't really in charge -- just like now. Who knows who's president? I believed Reagan when he said he didn't know about Iran-Contra. His gaze was like Biden's.

  5. ​​​​ @henrylicious Do you think our "standard of living" is good now? Can you move to Los Angeles, Denver, New York, Boston, San Francisco, anywhere you want? (Or is that impossible without a trust fund?) Can you evade being followed by the surveillance state online, and on camera the minute you set foot on a busy street? Freedom is vastly more important than a new screen device. My standard of living includes that.

  11. @JohnM-sw4sc  In the late 1970s, no one finished college, then moved back in with their parents, with no savings and a pile of student loan debt. No one. It did not happen, barring serious illness -- and even then, it was unusual. Occasionally, brothers, sisters, or first cousins would team up to split the rent. That's as "bad" as it got. College was hard, in-state tuition was nearly free, and graduation meant something. People worked summers to pay for their full year of tuition, fees, books, and supplies. And were very proud of themselves, rightly so. Nor did you need college for most jobs. Not even trade school was always essential -- companies trained you, paid apprenticeships trained you. Now, college + internships, with barely a stipend?? That you spend on commuting, lunch, and a new computer, if that? (And trade school loans are even more likely to default than college loans, last I heard. At least they are smaller.)

  12. @JohnM-sw4sc  You know what? I even forgot that the Reagan administration gave birth to Osama bin Laden and the mujahideen -- but I forgot for a reason. I don't think Reagan had much control there, either. I think other actors, including the CIA, were more important. But that may not be the case. Reagan may have been responsible as well. A lot of what is wrong today was born during the '80s.

I think a tiny group is deciding what happens to everyone else, and made-up discord is sapping the energy of people who could have some influence over our society if they only had the opportunity. I hope Varoufakis will have some insights about the structural changes imposed on us.
