  2. Great points. There are uncontrovertably patriotic people who have written about "blowback," and who are actually trying hard to provide the citizenry with facts, not propaganda. There are even voices from Muslim countries who have severely criticized American foreign policy, but without giving one inch to terrorists (like Tariq Ali, who wrote a Letter to a Young Muslim, pointing out, among other things, that the Vietnamese never resorted to terrorism or anything like it). Why aren't these taught? Serious question, because I don't get it.

  4.  @bromack3  What?? That made no sense. There are careful accounts of contemporary "blowback" beginning in the 1950s. That's where to start. As for Tariq Ali, his letter is absolutely brutal toward US policy --- but it places the blame for terrorism and every other atrocious, immoral, or dysfunctional response squarely on the shoulders of the Muslims who choose to do those things, and to dwell in fanaticism instead of resisting the policies they oppose in some rational, strategic manner. Quite a document.
