@streetteamtony2672 Oh, I see. No problem. You would enjoy Strossen's book. The examples of "hate speech" laws backfiring is worth the time and the price. I don't think most people know how bad they are. They do the opposite of what advocates for them think they do. In a BIG way. The actual fomenting violence/conspiracy/true threats laws we already have are plenty.

Sigh. What do you think the whole problem has been? Private companies are not restricted from censoring, only government actors are. On the contrary, private companies can censor, and be immune from liability for their decisions, thanks to Section 230. But it's different when private companies are really acting on behalf of government, or one party. It's also different when monopolies arise, and control the new commons.

@Nepthu OH I GET IT NOW. The signal was, Dump on Briahna. Yup, you're right. I missed it. My bad.

@streetteamtony2672 Me, too!! You've got to read Strossen. She lost family in the Holocaust and is a fierce critic of censoring hate speech. She's sublime in the Kantian sense.

@streetteamtony2672 Her book is HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech, Not Censorship She is also a past president of the ACLU. If there is any difference between her and Glasser, she is a stronger First Amendment advocate. Actually, a very inspiring person.

@streetteamtony2672 Even Chemerinsky wrote a book about free speech on campus, decrying censorship trends, and describing how he argued with today's students, most of whom could not accept that certain "offensive" speech was protected and could not be disciplined by universities. (I'm into this, too.)

@victorcates9330 HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech, Not Censorship Nadine Strossen's book. It explains exactly what speech is not First Amendment protected and why, and more important, why the list should not be expanded. Her examples of how "hate speech" laws have backfired, harming those they were intended to protect, are alone worth the price of the book.

@Nepthu Unlike Lil' You. 🤣

@Nepthu The fact that we have a First Amendment has zero bearing on what Twitter can do. The First Amendment can even be used to defend private censorship. For example, if I start a business, I can impose an office speech code. If the government goes after me for that, I can say they are violating my First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and association. Bet that's news to you . . . 😞

@streetteamtony2672 Yes, exactly. Nadine Strossen explains this in her book on hate speech. It's not long, it is a must-read. It doesn't take a long book to explain it. 😐

@streetteamtony2672 Maybe you should just copy that post and delete it as directed to me, then repost where appropriate?

@streetteamtony2672 YT sometimes does that --- switches message boards on you.

@streetteamtony2672 I never had any social media other than this (with a pseudonym but based directly on my real name), and only joined during the COVID lockdown. I still remember when people got seriously burned by joining MySpace, and I was lucky it didn't appeal to me so I didn't jump in. I was leery of social media since then.

I agree with you, however. If it is legal, it should not be censored.
