@taylorlibby7642 Good people are leaving teaching. Even the ones not harrassed are being corralled into serving as social worker/therapists. One very young and conscientious teacher I knew had pages-long, overwrought emails to answer every single night. Her personal life was nonexistent. If she tried to push back, she'd be written up and lose the possibility of tenure. Funny, the teachers who were mean right back in just the right way had better results. Reasoning, standing for honesty and sound principles, etc., never worked.

Dewane Hale Zero to do with it. The people who push that may be much more polite but are just as simplistic as the cancel crowd. You're suggesting compelled speech, plus hitting a minor who doesn't comply. (By the way, I left community college teaching because of this little mob as well. One kid who harrassed me thought I was a Trumper, and two others thought I was a Progressive. The former was scary, and was later arrested for touching two women at a Walmart. In all cases, they harassed me, then reported me. That's their MO.)

No one is silencing their effort to silence others when they express those thoughts through speech, such as in an editorial, rather than by shouting, threatening, banging on walls, and stuff like that. People are speaking up, and urging administrators not to give in to the demands.

@Kurgana Have you ever bothered to read a single Supreme Court case on it, even in summary form? I recommend (the incomparable) Nadine Strossen's recent book on hate speech. Or Chemerinsky on campus free speech. You can't say Chemerinsky isn't a leftist. Speech is subject to time/place/manner restrictions, not content restrictions. Heckling a speaker while he's trying to speak is subject to a time/place/manner restriction. You can say the VERY same things to denounce his discourse once he is done talking. So the wrong would be if the university invites Pence, then refuses alternate forums to denounce what he said, refuses a question and answer period, suppresses a speaker who offers to debate him, straight to his face while he's there, and all that sort of stuff. You don't get it, huh?

@Kurgana Yes, and a university can invite a former Vice President to speak. And students can register their displeasure in a news article. They can also demand a free forum to rebut him and ask him questions, and if they are denied, then their complaints are clearly meritorious. Public universities are free speech fora. The students can keep a speaker out of their dorm room, not out of lecture halls, absent a truly compelling reason. The fact the guy is a religious nut is not a compelling reason at all. Listen to what Robbie said about the Westboro case for an idea of how compelling the reason must be. Does this help?

@Kurgana No one is trying to shut them up. The point is, their request shouldn't be honored. Moreover, saying his speech (Pence's??) is violent is ridiculous. People are free to claim it is, and the rest of us are free to laugh. How do you know what he's going to say? If he is lame, it should be a breeze to rebut him. But wait. I thought that tragic milquetoast was violent.

@Kurgana Here's a hint: who are the students appealing to, to ban this speaker? The authorities. But the authorities in this case are clearly state actors, and cannot curtail constitutionally protected speech based on objections to its content. In your own home, there is no way anyone can frame that as coming from the state. You're not a state actor, you're exercising your right to free association. And you don't have to have anything to do with Pence. If people actually listened to this whole video, the main points are all there. I'm no fan of Robbie's, I find him childish and smug, but everything he said was right. Anyway, college has become a trade school with some fancy resort properties put at the students' disposal. Maybe they shouldn't bother inviting anybody to speak unless it's for career advice, stock tips, etc. People begged to make university more like a private business, where as we all know speech is severely curtailed. Business was considered the ideal model. Well here we are.
