Not only that, but he states that if anyone did feel uncomfortable after a date, he honors their feelings and apologizes. Is there something else needed? What in the world! Mayor Morse is right: MSM is the real scandal here. Frightening. Why do people think Trump gets away with screaming "fake news?"

@ruebert8089 Prove that no instructor, not even a guest lecturer, can have a romantic relationship with any student of that university, regardless of the age of the people involved. Then prove such a policy not only exists, but should exist. You're talking about invalidating some marriages.

@shahbazshaikh9169 As a matter of fact, that bare theoretical possibility would have to be reasonably foreseeable to matter at all. It would then apply to grad students dating undergrads. After all, they serve as TAs, and it's not rare for people with the same interests to date. What if one of them later becomes your instructor? Yee gads! We don't curtail a basic right based on a bare possibility.

@shahbazshaikh9169 That's not a freedom I would be willing to give up on a bare possibility, especially since there are ways to mitigate that. How often do you have only one choice for a class, with one professor, much less adjunct faculty? Don't take a class from a former boyfriend. You know, not all relationships are just a physical romp. They mean something, even when they are unconventional and relatively ephemeral. We work to live, not vice versa.

@shahbazshaikh9169 Well then I don't agree. I know plenty of people who married their college teacher, including my first roommate at college. My parents congratulated her warmly. And, it was a biracial marriage. As for strong emotions being suscitated by a romantic encounter, bringing inevitable problems in their wake -- I think that's a good problem to have. I don't mean that flippantly. I mean it for real. Everyone needs to go through that, or at least, they are lucky if they do..

@shahbazshaikh9169 Your math is wrong. A student who dated a teacher is bound to turn up in some teacher's class, but not necessarily in the class of the teacher they dated. Understanding feelings is not a basis for determining policies. Plenty of people don't want their child to date interracially, or to date anyone more than 5 years older or younger, or of a different social class, and they feel very strongly. Their feelings can have no bearing on policy. They are free to teach their own children to date strategically, always ask what someone does, and so forth. They are also free to vote against someone who behaves outside of these "norms," or who disagrees with these "norms." They are not free to slander someone who does. That's why we call it a private life.

It depends on combinatorics, i.e., how many ways are there to select 20 students from 1000 students, where order is unimportant and repetition is not allowed. But of course that omits the fact that several students who previously dated Teacher A could all take Teacher B's class, etc. You're not accounting for a lot of possibilities. All people come with feelings, and feelings always matter, but limiting how much one person's feelings should influence policies that deprive others of opportunities is not feelings-driven. I have NO problem with you or anyone else thinking this controversy is enough to turn you away from voting for Morse, just like some people decided not to vote for Krystal. It is the systematic smear job that should worry you. Every single student "victim" of an adjunct lecturer could one day be smeared in the same way, for one thing or another. If you don't see that, I frankly envy you. I was once optimistic that way, too. If you want to lobby for a rule that no faculty of any rank can ever date a student at the school where they are on the faculty, you are free to do that as well. The reason there is no such rule is partly because of the math.

Crossed what line? He was never their teacher. Show me the policy that a guest lecturer cannot date any student of that university, including those he never taught. Then tell me why that should be a policy. Plenty of students were older than he was, including graduate students and veterans.

If college students are THIS unable to manage adult relationships, we have BIG problems. A waiter or waitress of the same age can do better, couldn't they? Is college not just indebting people but ruining them in every possible way?
