That's actually not true. In-state public university tuition used to be so low that a summer job at minimum wage covered a full year. It was a political decision to withdraw tax support and replace it with federally-subsidized loans. No other country in the world does this. The kids who who worked their way through school were a different people.

@timmeyer9191 Can you be serious? I know of no small business that hasn't had at least one bankruptcy. I mean that seriously. The last president had six business bankruptcies. A student loan should be like any other. If fewer loans were available, the upward pressure on tuition would subside as well. In any case, other solutions would have to be found, all to the good. No other country saddles kids with these types of loans at the very start of adult life. We all see the result.

@jeffreysweet3458 There was a GI Bill along with in-state tuition that students routinely earned themselves, and work-study and jobs on or near campus to cover the rest. Any family that could afford to give their kid a couple of hundred a month could easily keep them out of debt. As far as private college tuition is concerned, I agree, but why was the great state university system destroyed?

@timmeyer9191 No. The gutting of the public university system, where at least 75% of students get their education, is the problem. This system did not exist, it came into being. Well how and why and when did that happen? NO other people do this to their young.

@timmeyer9191 Oh gawd, you know nothing about the economics of the university, then! Professors and other college instructors, and their salaries, are not the reason for the outrageous tuition at all. Administrators and various "development" initiatives (basically land acquisition and building projects) are the main reason.

How many people know that the most common degree BY FAR is Business? Next come the health care fields, with Nursing at number 1. This has been true for decades now. Those so-called "vanity" degrees (the infamous "Gender Studies" major) make up maybe 1% of all degrees. Hardly anyone majors in English unless as an Education major or pre-law; now, they do "Communications," which is great to impart some practical skills, sure, but is substantially less rigorous. Or does anyone think Advertising class is more challenging than Shakespeare?

@timmeyer9191 Plenty of European universities are TUITION-FREE, and they do not employ scads of part-time instructors who have never passed a rigorous civil service test to be allowed to teach at that level. The system of adjuncts you find here is literally illegal in lots of places. In Europe, fees are the equivalent of $750 to $1500 a year, in general, sometimes even less. American students take out loans to go to trade school, and talented students need to be at university, not community college -- which is not free, either. Talented students need to meet real professors and doctoral candidates in their field on Day One. It's bad enough that few high schools provide a solid education. Now you want them to wait two more years? (And then what, an unpaid internship?) Joining the military means giving up your rights under the Bill of Rights and risking you life. Someone should chose freely to defend their country, not be forced to do it because they have no real choice. I don't know why I'm pleading for your kids, though. I'm not really an American. If you don't care, I shouldn't either.

@timmeyer9191 I never took out a loan, except for one new car in my 40s, which I still have. Of course it was a Volvo S80 with all the frills. I paid it off early.

@timmeyer9191 Well, okay. Big picture. Take a look at the plunging birth rate. (I don't mean the fertility rate. I mean the birth rate.) It took a plunge in 2007 during the Great Recession, and it never recovered. That's 15 years ago. Someone who was in 6th grade then is in their mid-twenties now, and isn't having children. Maybe we need to tune out all of these "thought leaders" and "influencers," and figure this out. If forgiving this debt can help, then figure out a way to do it. Who knew what 2020 and 2021 would be LIKE? How were they supposed to prepare? How can they be to blame?

@timmeyer9191 When I was a little kid, like 7 or 8, people used to say a girl was going to college to get her MRS degree. They were being offensive and making fun of women, obviously, but in retrospect I only HOPE parents are privately telling their kids exactly that, and swearing them to secrecy. Who do you think has a better chance today, things being as they are, a young couple BOTH of whom have college degrees, or a couple where only one does, or neither? No one is even talking about finding the right person to marry, when that matters the most for a good life, and is really hard to do. Or is Silicon Valley supposed to colonize that, too?
