Most weird behavior that does not disrupt the school or involve the use of illegal substances or self-harming will probably go away faster if it is ignored like the childish nonsense that it is.

Are they making changes to their bodies, or just acting foolish like teenagers are known to do? Are they just dressing the part, or have they made any statement or gesture to suggest they are suicidal or suffering from some other emotional issue? Have they been caught with puberty blockers that were not prescribed to them -- or with any medication they were not prescribed? I think this is simple. I'm serious, too. Address each child by the NAME their parents registered them with. Forget about pronouns. Leave them alone to play with pronouns in their own sandbox. They'll outgrow it quicker.

Yes, thank GOD that everybody and everything isn't following them, to MAKE A PERMANENT RECORD(!!!) Use of prescription drugs in school that were not prescribed to that student already mandates a report and call to the parents for a conference, as do signs of actual mental or emotional illness, suicidal gestures, and so forth. In the meantime, forget about the pronouns. Address a child or adolescent by the name with which their parents registered them. Don't even honor middle names. Just stop the insanity. And leave them alone to play with their pronouns and their fashions, as long as they are decently covered. What I want to know is, does these children learn? LOL

@bryson8918 Exactly. Enough with spying and reporting! Leave the kids alone. There are still some First Amendment rights of self-expression in a public school, even for kids. Call everyone by their given name, one and done. The kids can call each other whatever they want, like kids have always done. So what?

Suppose a student is caught with a copy of "Our Bodies, Ourselves?"

Avoid the whole thing by addressing a child by the name with which the parents registered him or her, and ditch the pronouns. Let them play with pronouns in their own secret sandbox and they'll grow out of it faster. This has become a new moral panic. Actual problems in school, including suicidal gestures or the use of drugs that were not prescribed, or being the victim of bullying or bullying others, not to mention failing classes, already require either an immediate report or calling the parents in for a conference. Of course we are going to talk about pronouns on a day when there has been another school shooting.

@es8059 Give me a break. NO, leave the kid alone. And call them by the name their PARENTS gave them, when they presented their birth certificates to register. Teachers are not SPIES.
1
@es8059 So, we live under competing autoritarianisms now. Got it. Did you even read my whole post? There are already mandated reporter standards in place for things that actually matter, not for stamping out the latest thing the kids want to needle their parents with. Tell me, if a boy and girl steal a kiss, do you call Mommy? Or better yet, Daddy. Daddy definitely needs to know. One of my friends used to make out (literally) with her boyfriend just outside the door of our sophomore English class, and one day the teacher (who was lesbian) went up to them and said, "don't kiss boys where teachers can see you!!" Those were the days.

This has become part of the curriculum, and parents should be consulted about that type of curricular material, because it does not require specialized knowledge the way calculus or physics do.

Logical question

@Web5ter-94 They are supposed to have their noses in everybody's business, which of course means that only the very worst people will go into teaching -- worst intellectually and worst ethically. Sounds like a plan, but it wouldn't be my plan.

Full transparency about what? That their kid is acting like a fool during puberty? Most weird behavior that does not disrupt the school or involve the use of illegal substances or self-harming will probably go away faster if it is ignored like the childish nonsense that it is. A teacher should call a student by the name with which they were registered by their parents, and if they insist on playing with pronouns, either humor them or don't. Big deal. In fact, avoid the whole thing by using their name.
1
@justin79811 So don't use pronouns when addressing your students. Use the NAME their parents registered them with.
1
@hrs2044 AMEN. Finally, someone has refused to take the latest hysteria bait!
1
@justin79811 Nope, I was responding to your very first comment, not the others. I agree with hrs2044. This is devolving into a new moral panic when the real problems with schools involve things like illiteracy, poor mathematical skills, serious bullying, and the need for metal detectors. It appears to be easier to talk about bloody pronouns. We need more distance between students and teachers in general. We know that works better for the aim at hand -- educating them.
1
@justin79811 Oh. Cool. I hope parents won't feel constrained by the "culture" to make that clear to the school. Little Johnnie's name is JOHN, and Little Abby is ABIGAIL, thank you very much.
1
And simply use the name the child was registered as having, by their parents when they signed them up for school. Ditch the whole pronoun business; let them play with pronouns in their own secret sandbox and they'll grow out of it faster.
