Everyone forgot Charlie Hebdo?

Maybe you don't understand French. I listened to their statement in French. You clearly don't know what they said.
9
Charlie Hebdo? How soon we forget, huh?
7
No, good for her. This was about Dionysios. I thought the right knew their classics. Don't you know what ancient Greeks did during their festivals?
6
@JB-lovin She is correct. I thought American conservatives knew their classics. This in a made-up controversy. I guess everybody forgot Charlie Hebdo.
6
@beelin6707 No, I prefer to have a solid historical memory, thanks. It's called perspective. Up close, and you lose it.
5
No she's not. Remember Charlie Hebdo?
5
@Fenristripplex Read a book. No, I mean a real book. With your eyes.
4
@beelin6707 If you don't look, you don't see. Besides, when do you read any paper? 😂
3
@matthawthorn3461 In fact, I just did. The resemblance is hardly striking. In any case, it is a painting and is housed in a museum. It is not a religious icon. As for what the ancient Greeks were like, I refer you to Euripides, The Bacchae, to start. The French have a cultural tradition of extreme parody of authority, and of really hitting the mark. Diderot's The Nun dates from about the time of the American revolution. You might want to see what that says. I defended Charlie Hebdo, I defend this.

@thekentuckyan8088 Be my guest.

He seems to have forgotten Charlie Hebdo. And this was Dionysios. Who knew to be offended until some activists turned it into a "thing?"
2
I thought the right knew their classics.

@beelin6707 You know what this is really about? It's the New Popular Front trying to further erode support for Macron. The leftist LFI leader Jean-Luc Melenchon criticized this display. I like him, and support NFP, but I understand why he's grabbing on to this. Just like the far left was more critical of Charlie Hebdo, and very critical of recent v mandates, than were the neoliberals. (In fact, a prominent PCF denounced mandates for health care workers.) In France, the memes are different.

@thekentuckyan8088 The real winner in France was Melenchon against Macron. Good.
1
Who knew to be offended until they were told they ought to be?

@arcguardian 😂😂😂

@PabloTheThinker The Last Supper is a painting in a museum, not an icon in a church. And ancient Greek rites celebrating Dionysios could be raucous and dangerous. I refer you to Euripides.
1
@PabloTheThinker Charlie Hebdo didn't? Oh brother.
1
@PabloTheThinker Funny how you forgot Charlie Hebdo.
1
@DarwinsDunce Charlie Hebdo still exists.
1
@garyware1261 Sept 2020: "French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo is at it, again: it has chosen to republish the derogatory cartoons of Prophet Muhammad which provoked a violent attack against it in 2015. The editors say it is “essential” to reprint these on the eve of the trial of the perpetrators of that violence."
1
@DarwinsDunce I wasn't allowed to link or quote. Look it up. They republished some of the very cartoons in question a few years ago.
1
@DarwinsDunce Shows what you know.
1
@Mr.SlipNSlide It's. The. Olympics. Look up Olympus.
1
@Mr.SlipNSlide There are French Gods? The original Olympic Games were festivals in their honor? The Ninth Symphony and the Mona Lisa aren't parodied? Charlie Hebdo wasn't savage toward all religions/ideologies? Such parodies were not controversial in France as well? Funny world view. I don't get it.

@roccocupido5082 This is a global venue, correct, and France is the host country. But do you know what this "culture war" is really about? It's the New Popular Front trying to further erode support for neolib Macron. The leftist LFI leader Jean-Luc Melenchon criticized this display. I like him a lot, but I understand why he's grabbing on to this . . . Just like the French left was more critical of Charlie Hebdo than the centrists were, and much more critical of recent v mandates, as well, which were imposed by Macron. In France, the memes are different. They have a long tradition of parody and burlesque, and using it to take down politicians. Grab some 🍿
1
@roccocupido5082 Too bad my response went poof. YT doesn't handle truth too well.
1
@McJerkenstien There's Charlie Hebdo for that.
1
@valkimura1053 And therefore . . . ?
1
@valkimura1053 I meant that the right invokes the Greeks without betraying the least understanding of who they were or what they were like. I know hardly anyone studies this stuff. Yes, The Last Supper is a painting in a museum, not an icon in a church, and the Greek rites celebrating Dionysios could be raucous and even dangerous. See, for example, Euripides.
1
@valkimura1053 I hope my answer comes back, but I'm not holding my breath.
