@utah_koidragon7117 The policies that ensured the working class were fairly compensated for their labor --- the policies that ensured the financial sector was closely regulated (because deregulation becomes functionally equivalent to counterfeiting), offshoring jobs was not incentivized and subsidized, and the minimum wage had real purchasing power. Why do you think a 1967 college student could work their own way through school, and a 2020 grad is in debt until their 50s?

@utah_koidragon7117 Getting individual health insurance was no big thing in 1960. Anyone who wanted it could have it. And those who didn't, saved up for a baby and paid for it themselves. My parents did that.

@fritzforsthoefel8031 That's not what happened, lol. How do they get you to believe that? What used to be affordable with hard work now requires massive debt, or getting hugely lucky in the stock market. Every major politician has contributed to these developments. This is what happens when FIRE takes over an economy (finance, insurance, real estate). These are all less productive or unproductive parts of the economy.

@utah_koidragon7117 Sure. When the minimum wage had the greatest purchasing power, that was what people had --- real freedom. To move, to try their luck, to pursue their dreams. That was what a couple of roommates could do, and did. They didn't need a trust fund. The current DNC are monstrosities. Everybody knows that.

@jonnyjfive You mean the Alphabet Mafia? If the real leftists sinned, it was in being oblivious to LGBTQ, and even hostile to them, not in promoting them. It used to be called bourgeois decadence. I still see it that way --- to demand extensive surgeries and expensive drugs for life, and to considered yourself immediately entitled to them without first trying talk therapy, better nutrition and exercise, wholesome hobbies to take your mind off yourself, and so forth, is decadent. The most extreme treatment should come last, after you've tried everything else. I'm not surprised that Joe Biden doesn't see it that way. Cha-ching.

@utah_koidragon7117 That isn't what happened. The major difference is in the state tax support for higher education. I will agree that regulations have caused an explosion in the size of college administrative costs, which have mostly harmed education. The small benefits some regulations provided could have been accomplished at very low cost. At any rate, that is the second most important cause of skyrocketing costs, after the withdrawal of state tax support. Then, there are also the dubious building programs at so many schools that have increased costs. (Does every state school need a luxury sports arena? Really?) Minimum wage certainly was a living wage. I once lived on it with one roommate. Who works their way through college now? In four to five years? They cannot be in school full time and working enough hours to cover both. It can be done over a somewhat longer time frame, yes, but not on the usual schedule. The least expensive state school near me graduates people on average after 7 years, and offers a lot of night classes. Most students who go there live at home, and they have their degrees by age 25 or so, which is not so bad. It's easy to continue for a Master's also, which is good. The more expensive state schools all require loans.

@fritzforsthoefel8031 All of those high skilled workers depend very heavily on the "low skilled." Who do you think provides child care, elder care, taxi service, landscaping, pizza, coffee? Who picks the crops and delivers them? Who do you think cleans office buildings, schools, hospitals, shopping centers, airports, and commuter trains to the suburbs? Who do you think picks up all the high rise garbage, not to mention medical waste? Who makes sure the sewage goes where it's supposed to? None of that can be outsourced to China, yo.

@fritzforsthoefel8031 No, a LIVING WAGE. All of those workers should be able to live. All of those federal tax claims are spurious because they ignore payroll taxes, excise taxes, other state and local taxes, and property taxes embedded in rents. All of those fall disproportionately on workers. Most are not even assessed against interest and dividend income.

@fritzforsthoefel8031 There was a time when working 40+ hours a week covered the basics, no matter the job. What was actual is possible. Every real job has dignity. The most lucrative field today is propaganda. (State surveillance, corporate surveillance, advertising and marketing, operating social media companies, social media influencing, trolling for local politicians and foreign governments alike, etc.) Tell me why that pays more than picking up garbage. The field is full of Ivy League grads.

@fritzforsthoefel8031 At the level of the highly skilled professions, money is not the primary motivation. If it were, all neurosurgeons and theoretical physicists would trade derivatives and swaps for a few years, then retire. No one chooses not to be a surgeon or a lawyer upon hearing that a sanitation worker or a barista makes an adequate living. Or that a trader (or a televangelist) can get rich quick. Look it up.

If you think that's how it works, read Robert Whitaker, Anatomy of an Epidemic. It's an old book, not about the current catastrophe. Much money has changed hands, yet very little progress has been made in American public health. I have to wonder whether you're one of the people who was harmed in the way Whitaker describes.

@fritzforsthoefel8031 Well, then you will like the book. It doesn't have a political tendency. One theme, that children are too often overmedicated, tends to be considered conservative now, but that's only by current lights. He makes his case very carefully. I found it compelling.
