This was George Bush's go-to. When he didn't want to address an issue, he'd grin, purse his lips, and say "thar's a conspiracy theory."

@hehheh382 I said I thought the question is valid. I don't see that your scenario is likely. If you are a high-flying MSM journalist, you don't think Aaron can touch you. Or you think recording protects you as well. Consent to talk to Aaron at all is what's interesting. Townsend is not bright. He made a mistake. The late Alexander Cockburn always said that if stupidity can explain something, go with stupidity.

@hehheh382 The question about recording is valid, but the conclusion that it must be a stunt is a real howler. Would this Mark Townsend guy have to lodge a formal complaint? Well, talk about egg on his face then. If he wants to make a bigger fool of himself . . . Obviously he has left himself and The Guardian open to a defamation suit. N. B. I cannot speak to Aaron, who is exceptionally scrupulous, but in general, the big boys don't worry about legality all that much. And in some US states, you can record conversations as long as one of the parties knows. IOW, a third party cannot do it without consent. A party to the conversation simply has the right to protect themselves and thus to record, even without the other person's consent.

@hehheh382 So, if Townsend said he's willing to go on the record, you think it must be staged? Maybe it means Townsend is arrogant. These people think the independent media are a bunch of nobodies who can't hurt them.

@hehheh382 What makes you think The Guardian does not record all calls itself, for security purposes? Most corporations, etc., do. Then their journalists can't very well object to being recorded by the other party. It (i.e., the fact that they record all calls) may even function as implied consent for both parties to record. I think that's most likely, actually.

@hehheh382 Aaron is Canadian by birth and based in Brooklyn. He has been in Brooklyn for ages. Extraterritoriality died with empire.

1. Oh really? 2. Then they all are? Just call any one of 'em a conspiracy theorist, I mean why not?

@hehheh382 Well, I suspect The Guardian has to record all calls. They must even get crazy threats all the time. I suspect Aaron could only talk to Townsend via his Guardian number and because Guardian records as a matter of course, Aaron can and does as well. The usual phrase is "this is on the record." But even if this system were not in place, I don't think any major journalist who consents to speak to someone they wrote about in highly critical terms (now imagine if they declined to talk to them . . . they can't, they'd have to hide to avoid declining) can expect not to be recorded, or to be able to protest later if they were recorded without express consent. It doesn't make sense.

@joshbell5387 Thank you for real information! That sounds like Aaron. He won't himself do what he knows no one should have done to him.
