Did you think that French people actually stop working at 62 and sit on their arses? No, they begin to collect a pension, and thus are secured against the stresses that come with one's seventh decade on earth. Anyone who can continue to work does so, and often they pursue something they truly love, with real gusto. I lived there. I know.

If over 80% of Americans cannot afford to stop working, how does Robbie expect them to retire on their own assets and without Social Security? Does he want to step over 75-year-old beggars on his way to work? Does he think the system really will run out of money? Funny how railway workers, sanitation workers, retail workers, and everyone else Robbie relies on to live are just too much of a burden, while the "entrepreneurs" who figured out a way to combine advertising and mass surveillance are billionaires. I guess Facebook has contributed more to society than grocery stores. /s

@privacyplease1556 Those savings programs (IRA, 401(k), etc.) have existed for some 40 years, and employee stock ownership programs are much older. This period has been the period of greatest stock market growth in history-- and you cannot expect that growth to be repeated going forward. Where are all the millionaires? If you think individuals can have the same power over their fate, on an individual basis, as do those presiding over the vast concentrations of wealth do, then please don't invest. You don't understand what's going on well enough to take the risk.

Those people qualify for full Social Security, and they collect the pensions they earned while continuing to work in something they don't find so unpleasant or stressful as their main gig, and without worrying so much, knowing that the basics are taken care of. P. S. You didn't think French people actually stop working at 62, did you? (Who do you think owns and runs all of those charming boutiques and independent bookstores all over Paris?)

@shawnsdrumcave These various private retirement savings vehicles have existed for over 40 years, hence roughly two generations. Where are all the people who can retire on those investments? At most 10% can, with no other income stream. When 90% cannot do something, then that is not a plan. That is a gamble.

If you want "freedom," abolish all patent, trademark, and copyright protection, and police protection, and protection of the global shipping lanes and other logistics. Get your own security forces, set up your own tribunals to settle disputes. Why should I pay for your goons? I don't need all the war you seem to need to support the dollar and keep up your standard of living. Why should I pay for it?

Where are the people who can retire with their Roth and no other pension? BTW, it is estimated that a secure retirement requires a million dollars in financial assets and a home without a mortgage. Guess who has that?

@marcusmilling5296 First of all, higher infant and maternal mortality certainly DO have a very large effect on overall life expectancy; life expectancy does not fall on a normal curve, hence the mean life expectancy is, well, not very meaningful (the mean is informative only where you have a normal curve, so that both median and mode are close to the mean). Second, what matters is life expectancy at retirement age, not at birth. Consult an actuarial table for that, like the ones the life insurance companies use. Plato lived to 80, Sophocles to 90; the human lifespan has been what it is for millennia. In their cases, longevity could very well have been thanks to their diet and the mountains, seas, clean water and air around Attica, plus the custom of walking, and practicing gymnastics for life.

French people draw a pension at 62. They don't generally stop working. Ageism is less rampant there, and anyone who has something they love to do will continue to do it.
