Oh come on, she was right. Who was training for national or international competitions? Or even state championships? Not to mention NBA, NFL, Olympics . . . This is starting to sound like a participation trophy. Get over yourself.

@ryanhead2004 Actually, that is not the case. By high school, between academics and their rigorous training schedule, they had no time at all for high school sports. You must have no idea how champions are made.

@adamguerrero5293 You're right about that, but they no longer rely on high school to develop them, or at least not usually. There is a whole industry of clubs, camps, coaches for that. A lot of money is on the table.

@patchandy That's one way they get visibility, true, but that's no longer where they develop, or at least not in general. That has changed. I suggest you do some research. EVERYTHING is privatized now.

You think today's NFL relied on whoever happened to be the coach at their neighborhood high school, and allowed that random person to have a huge influence on their chances for a career. Okay. And Ivy League students and their parents don't have application consultants, sometimes starting in 6th grade. Or earlier. Prep school. Cool. Like I said, never mind.

@erikblah Apparently it's not, if nobody knows today's competitive kids' sports are now businesses. No, an obscure kid from Nebraska out of a Frank Capra movie will not suddenly turn up and be the next great quarterback. Okay, maybe ONE might. It's not strictly impossible. But that's not how it happens. A lot of cool stuff changed.
