@serialfishkillerguido4925 They aren't always free to speak. They are threatened, they lose jobs, they are not hired in the first place, other people turn away, and plenty of people tell them "they better watch out," keeping the consequences vague. How long did Dr. King live? Malcolm X? Medgar Evers? Not everyone is paid for what they say, you know. Some people take real risks, and don't ask for permission before they speak.

@paulstallings1177 I think that's what it primarily is -- though not exclusively. When it stops working, new advertising memes will be found. I think commercial speech has the highest de facto protection today.

Krystal's point is not that "cancel culture" is not a threat. Her point is that the label "cancel culture" can also be used as a mere slogan, to "cancel" unwanted speech. Of course. If people misunderstood, then they stopped listening. The new media seem more and more sinister in how they train us to pick up on buzz, jump to conclusions, and stop listening to arguments.

Krystal is referring to the peaceful demonstration that was cleared from the streets to make a path for Trump to have his picture taken in front of a church. She is not saying that there were no demonstrations anywhere that turned violent.

Because . . . it isn't. That wasn't what she said. That was her answer to the self-styled "left" who promote cancel culture and other ways of curtailing free speech -- your tactics will be used against you.

Does anyone think "cancel culture" is about anything except score settling and jockeying for plum jobs, which are dwindling as we speak? The elites want to save the jobs for their children, and will use any strategy to do it. When this move stops working, they'll find another. People who jeered at a survivor of a school massacre now pretend "cancel culture" is the big problem and purely a leftist trope. But the jeering is "cancel culture," too. Krystal: "Setting the contours of the debate is real power." Perfect. That is it.
