No one is being honest about how uneducated high school graduates are. That's the "elephant in the room," forgive the cliche. The real crime is that much of college is a continuation of the same.

@aleksandrastockhold2131 Exactly. This is one reason why the great state universities that were under $500 per semester for in-state students fifty years ago cost a fortune now. In the 60s and 70s, the universities were full of the children of steelworkers and auto workers, and small farmers in states like Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota. You better believe they had to throw a monkey wrench into that.

@blakereeves179 Where you got your degree is only too important, and should not be. They just told you. Anyone in the top half of Harvard's L1 class at the end of the year HAS six figure jobs to choose from upon graduation. SIU's law school? Not so much.

@blakereeves179 And many major firms want a BA and paralegal certificate, and have wanted both for decades. The certificate is superfluous in many states, but the malpractice insurers dictate. So yeah, the gender studies major from a prestigious school who gets a paralegal certificate can make six figures pretty quickly in, say, New York, San Francisco, etc.

@blakereeves179 I don't disagree about the rampant discrimination based on where you went to school. It has become a proxy for family wealth and ties, rather than based on merit.

@blakereeves179 1. Why am I not shocked? Sorry to hear, but hardly surprised. 2. No problem. Of course the great favoritism extended to grads of a handful of private colleges is unwarranted and at this point unfair.

The Seven Sisters grads will have jobs. And the employers they know -- namely, other colleges -- do want those degrees. It's an insular world. They aren't subjected to competition like we are.

@archstantonainthere4526 A loan that can never be discharged in bankruptcy should accrue no interest, or no interest for the first ten years -- something like that. Interest constantly accruing and no bankruptcy protection is a crime.

@archstantonainthere4526 Look, some contracts are adhesion contracts. A student loan is not exactly that, but it's in a gray area for sure. What do you say to someone who got a job after high school, and at 21 they see no future for themselves above $18/hour without a degree? Not every girl can be a plumber or an electrician, much less a truck driver, or a foreign car mechanic. People in retail see promotions blocked. RETAIL. It is evident that, right or wrong, college is increasingly necessary. Back when it wasn't, like, FIFTY years ago, all of the great state schools had such low tuition that a minimum wage summer job paid a full year of in-state tuition and fees, and you could cobble together scholarships, work-study, and a hundred bucks a month from home to cover the rest. Or, you could work minimum wage for a year, live at home, get about 5% interest on a savings account, and pay for four years of tuition yourself, and use summer jobs for room and board. Now, when college is far more necessary, the money isn't there and kids have to borrow. What happened? On top of it, loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy BUT accrue extreme amounts of interest. You don't see how unfair this is?

@archstantonainthere4526 How is it fair that Biden sets the rules, when he paid next-to-nothing for HIS education? Do you also realize that as tuition has gone up, luxurious amenities have increased but the quality of the education has declined? Schemes like this are never good. College should be very hard and very, very cheap. See Chris Hedges on what a profound scam has been taking place at many schools. Some of his prison inmate students, whom he teaches through Rutgers Extention, are more diligent than people he taught at Ivies. This is a pity. Don't imagine that he's exaggerating, either. I wish!

@archstantonainthere4526 How would my getting stuck with a $5000 medical bill for something that should have been free, and I was told would be free, mean that everyone else should pay as much as I do? What do you plan to do about that? What's your remedy? Sorry, this is ridiculous. School is no more a "deal," much less a "bad deal," than is medical care. These are necessities.

I actually don't agree with this. When you get out into the world and see how good the passionate people are, in every field, you soon find that either you cannot compete with them on productivity and quality, and other objective measures, or you have to band with others to stab them in the back and get them out of your way that way. That's the real world in a nutshell.

@AQuietNight Excellent point. As far as I know, only California still allows that. Illinois does not. I agree with the California system and wish it were much more robust. (BTW, I am licensed in California.)

@alvincyt Doesn't it depend on how much she makes? If it were like any other debt, and could be discharged under certain conditions, that would be taken into consideration. Anyway, it's evident we were not speaking in real dollar terms (neither of us), or comparing purchasing power. Fifty years ago, housing really was about 25% of a typical person's salary. Good food was inexpensive, and a restaurant dinner or a family breakfast once a week was quite ordinary.

Or, just name one major book, or an author who addresses each of these. Good luck to you. Too "boring?" Okay. How about two major authors addressing First Amendment rights on college campuses? Both have to be lawyers. Both can be anti-censorship.

@JJ-nu8qi I studied ancient philosophy in Paris. No. I could not do that with a library card and internet. It was tuition-free, under $750 a year in administrative fees, probably well under. It wasn't an American student abroad silliness. I thought you said you could find out all that stuff with those tools and without college. That was the point. So . . . Prove it. Take the last question, then. Two major books have come out relatively recently.
