Nor is motherhood and family under attack in Latin Europe like it is here, that they need a new defender. The "multiculturalists" here who want to censor her are just as ignorant, so there is that.

Considering how strong the neo-Nazis are there, and how much they influence the military and government, well beyond their numbers, I would hold off on interpreting that as a positive. There are no good guys waging that 8-year-long war, however much Putin is the worst actor in the picture at the moment.

How would a people who don't study history or foreign languages be able to "learn differently" for themselves? They won't know. They will react to her like they react to everything -- as if it were consumer advertising.

@wikingagresor Well, I remember when newly independent Croatia resurrected that symbolism, and so far it appears to have meant little or nothing. I don't know what will happen in this case. Do you know anything about the history of these movements? Europe still has history.

@jvtherrien Depending on how complete the monopoly, and how much they carry out policies that government actors request, they may indeed be violating the First Amendment. But you are right, you stated the general rule. I'm citing possible exceptions to the rule.

I actually mean what I say, and I don't engage in slogans like "plausible deniability." (I, unlike you, have no need to.) You claim you know she cannot possibly be a fascist, and has said nothing that could cause anyone to take a closer look? Have you or your parents ever lived in Europe, Italy in particular, but elsewhere where there were allies or collaborationists, with the Axis? Never mind, the answer is obvious. @kaushikbasu3778 Just came back from Europe. My intuition -- and it is no more than that -- is that Meloni is cosplaying. She is using slogans to get elected, and is just as much a player in the new neoliberal world order, dominated by finance capitalism, as anyone else. In other words, her talk is all talk. She's a phony. Review what happened in Greece -- everyone was so sure a "new day was dawning." Then the new government just played along with EU bankers and did nothing for the people. Because the bankers are the government. Just my impression, obviously could be wrong. Let's see how this unfolds.

@kaushikbasu3778 I'm not politically naive, but feel free to suit yourself. No fear-mongering in my comments. Please excuse me for knowing things. But as Hume pointed out, there is never any logical guarantee that the future will be conformable to the past -- not even in the physical sciences, much less history and politics. Hence the chance that I'm wrong is always there. That's no surprise to me.

I suggested that you were opposed to people who have put in the work to develop intellectually and reflexively disrespected them. That is something you have in common with the true-bluest Americans. I suggested that you and they may come to regret that, for purely pragmatic, self-interested reasons. For example, I used to teach community college, including STEM subjects, as a public service. I'll never make that sacrifice again.

She has always attacked identity politics, and it's obvious that id pol is the grift that both parties run all the time. What have progressives "won" over the past 40 years? Nothing at all. See what a real natality policy means, like they have in France or in the Scandinavian countries, where parenthood is so much easier and more pleasant, with lower mortality rates and fewer worries. France subsidizes pregnancies to the point where it sends every mother a check for maternity clothes. It's universal, like Social Security for the elderly.
