Was he or was he not either violent or imminently violent AT THE TIME he was killed? That is the sole question here. His history is evidence of the failure of the justice system, not evidence that the choke hold was proper here. Calling it vigilante isn't fair, calling it a crime is premature: let a careful and fair investigation proceed.

That is actually not the same. If the girlfriend had a history with that particular man, she has evidence of how much danger she is in. If this servicemember had had previous experience with the victim, in which the victim was violent, took out a weapon, etc., that would matter.

@JoeBidenHatesU Did the man who took him down have that specific information? Think this through.

THANK YOU

@Ffff Nnnnul, you're the one who doesn't get it. That is actually not the same. If the girlfriend had a history with that particular man, she has evidence of how much danger she is in. If this servicemember had witnessed the victim be violent on previous occasions, that would have a bearing on what he chose to do this time.

@JoeBidenHatesU BTW, that sounds like good enough for you, to move to potentially lethal force? How are you known in your community? Does anyone fear you? Did you ever give them a reason? (I say eff that! This "standard" will, by the way, usually result in discrimination against men.) We have people losing livelihoods based on very dubious social media "reputation." Are we about to jack that up to 11?

@aussierob390 This point has already been answered I see. Also, my responses to Nick Smith -- I hope they aren't shadowed, as usual by these ghouls, so that no one can even have a discussion anymore.

@waynemorgan6153 Exactly. I don't disagree with the broader point. OP is right about all of it except the part about onlookers stepping in with potentially lethal force absent imminent threat to life or limb. The self-defense/defense of others laws are crystal clear.

@waynemorgan6153 I support the mayor this time, who asked people to cool it and wait for a calm investigation, and not be prejudiced concerning what happened. I don't agree with taking sides now, or calling the Marine a vigilante. What I said. :/
