@Pan-Britannic Traditionalist Conservative Your typo makes your comment hard to understand, but I think I do. Didn't the entire country have "financial troubles" due to the actions of Wall Street? Who paid for those mistakes? Not "whataboutism." I simply want to understand how you apply this Broad Principle to many sorts of situations. Y'know, like they do in, say, physics. Also comes back to POINT of the original comment, in case you've failed to notice.

Are you suggesting they infantilize them, to boot? Well, if they are as intent on building up their militaries as you claim, I think you have your answer right there.) YOU really don't know what anyone is talking about! Listen, I don't have a dog in this fight. My family is in Europe, literally all of them, and if I live long enough, I'll join them. My generation still had outstanding state schools where a year's tuition could be earned by working hard all summer, full time of course, and where most kids took a calculus class. This was character buliding in many ways. And kids didn't sit on Mommy's insurance until age 26, much less in Mommy's basement after achieving their degree. You recognize the problem. You all figure it out.

Withdrawal of state tax support for PUBLIC colleges and universities is the problem. Let the privates do whatever the hell they want -- they do, anyway, including letting in "special development" students whose parents buy them a spot -- oops, I mean make charitable philanthropic humanitarian donations. Government-backed loans need to be capped, and dischargeable in bankruptcy after a certain time period. A public university used to cost per year no more than a student could earn by working full time all summer. THAT built pride and responsibility. No one can do that anymore -- plus the kids sit on their parents' health insurance through their 26th birthday. This generation is being crippled. It is a crime.

@dm0065 The real problem is that the private schools are the feeders into all levels of government. Who is the last president who went to a public university? The last Supreme Court justice? Congress, ditto -- most are products of private schools. Worse than that; add in: major corporate executives and boards, investment banks, Silicon Valley, Wall Street, all of MSM, print and broadcast, Hollywood. It is insane. Show me another country like it. There are none.

State universities should not charge more in tuition and fees than an average student can earn in that state with a full-time, three month summer job. That's what my generation usually had, still. Why was state tax support withdrawn? Why hasn't minimum wage KEPT PACE?

The major investment banks were being offered annual bonuses sufficient to set their principals and their principals' children up for life, and were screaming, "no, NO!!" but government forced them to take the money. It even forced banks in Germany, Iceland, and lots of other places to trade in exotic derivatives and swaps. They all screamed no, but, alas . . . Same thing happened with LIBOR, the repo market, HSBC money laundering, recent market manipulation, etc., etc. They all keep saying no, the government keeps forcing them.

@dm0065 Earning your own way was possible when the states supported ALL levels of education with tax money, and the minimum wage kept pace with real productivity. No one should have to risk death, or having to kill to live, or becoming disabled, or PTSD, for an education. Or a small business grant. You think that should be the deal? In order to have what you need to live, you may have to kill someone else? Well then do open all the prison doors.

@dm0065 Don't get me wrong. Many of my very closest friends are veterans. In fact, pretty much the only realistically antiwar people I have ever known are combat veterans. They are among the most intelligent people I've ever met, too. No surprise. There is no way to pay them back. GI Bill is barely a start, if that.
