  1. This is the kind of information everyone should have, and a viewpoint they should hear, in order to make an intelligent CHOICE. The CHOICE must be up to them. Too bad no one reads literature anymore. Then they would know about how fraught relationships always were. Dwelling in contemporary culture makes a person myopic, and cultural forces take on a meaning that makes them appear inexorable when they are not. France in the '80s had two years of paid maternity leave for a special needs child, and whether a full year was paid or unpaid, no one got fired. Gee, how could they afford it? I wonder whether they still do. They Americanized a lot.
