Erm . . . Are their profit margins tightening? "Affecting" is rather vague.

Then explain 1980 to 2020.

@jca9417 We've had huge jumps many times. Previous increases gave rise not to "inflation" under the usual meaning of the term (which I agree has been falsified to a degree, to avoid raising Social Security benefits to match real inflation), but to asset bubbles, and hence was funneled to the same oligarchy. These are the people whose tax cuts required massive deficit spending, and who in turn bought T bonds and collected interest from the Treasury instead of paying taxes to the Treasury. Anyway, in 2020 the velocity of money declined so greatly that money supply increases did not matter.

@MythicalVigilante Because she failed to account for profits . . . Soaring profits. Edit: add /s I hope that was obvious.

@jca9417 Take a look at the increase in money supply over the forty-year period and compare it to inflation rates, and then think about where the money actually went, and exactly what prices actually rose.

@PhoenixCrown Okay, but then you have to be careful to state that you do not mean the usual, deceptive, definition. I agree with you, actually.

@jca9417 What I'm interested in, and need to study dispassionately, is the issue with the so-called "repo market," which showed wide fluctuations again in the fall of 2019. We should have all been paying attention then.

@demitri2510 That requires two steps, which is un-American.

@JamesTLangford If inflation becomes that bad, AND they lose pricing power, then yes. It could happen.

@PhoenixCrown This was a period when we went from two or three roommates being able to get an apartment together in NYC or San Francisco, to the point where young newlyweds who both finished college or have a skilled trade and work 40 to 50 hours per week cannot buy a modest house and struggle to afford a condo.

OH MY GOD, I just checked. The Russian central bank tried to lower its value relative to the dollar AND FAILED. I thought easing interest rates in Russia, which worked briefly, would continue to work. Silly me, huh?

@wouldntulike2no125 you are too right No, I'm not kidding, not one bit.

They're asking for pitchforks.
